DEVPEN, A Community Project
|
As some of you might know, DEVPEN.com is a sister site of Neoseeker, and is owned by Neo Era Media. Over the past few years, the site has been upgraded, re-designed, and had some up's and down's. DEVPEN has the potentional to become a better, more active site, it just needs some loving care. After a few talks with Redemption, I have gotten permissions to start working on a dummy site for a new DEVPEN. A dummy site is a very basic, light-weight, development version site. Think of it as something the Administration could take a look at, and say that they like this, or change that. As of right now, the main focus should be on designing the site. That would include how it works, how it looks, how the database should be set up, what do we want. This thread will be used as a planning and discussion area for the dummy site. Please stop by and let us know if you are interested, we would love all the help that we can get. This is going to be a community project, so we can definatily find a place for you some where. If you have any questions, please post them here, of your can get in contact with me using the contact info in this thread.

I was thinking if it would be possible to extend Devpen to more languages this time around. Currently, it is mostly based on web languages, but I think it would be cool if it supported other languages, like the C-Family, Java, and so on.

Being a graphic guy, I'd be interested in the main design of the site's interface. From fabricating general mockups to logo design, count me in.

I agree.
By the way, if you need any help, with absolutely anything, just ask me. Considering I code AND design, I'm a key.

Well lets start to think of the things that we want for the site.
- Articles - This is a must.
- A few editors/approvers that know what they are talking about
- Member submitted content - Anyone can add an article... The editors would need to approve it
- Image upload for pictures in articles
- Comment system to the articles
- Small tidbits
- This could just be a nice little find. Something that wouldn't have the length for a full article
- A Facebook-like "like" system. Members can "like" the tidbit
- Member profiles
- Each member should have their own DEVPEN profile page
- I want to have DEVPEN profiles attached to Neo Profiles, like nXchange and Game Grep. This one will be hard to do, but I'll work on this one myself.
- AJAX
- I would love to have a very dynamic site, filled with AJAX and jQuery elements
Now I know I touched on a few core topics, but what else could be included, feature wise?

http://devpen.projectawings.com/So there is the dev-site for DEVPEN. Me and Nagare have been working on the core programming and styles respectively. What ya guys think so far? Now, not all the links work... Only the login, logout, register, and categories links do. Also, I've added accounts for all the Neostaff, myself, Vermillion, Nagare, Ecto, and overKill. Your password is your username. Since you can't destroy anything from your account yet, I haven't added a function to change passwords. The member class is very basic, since I really want to be able to use the same Member class / database as Neo uses. Nagare has been working on some various styles, listed below.
What do you guys think so far? Any suggestions or bugs, please post them!

The new styles look nice, except the articles section could use more padding on the left and right. I hate seeing the text right up against the edge of the container.

The styles are nice. I must agree that the article section needs a little more paddin'.

How about getting a devpen similar to the new GameGrep design?

But it could start being used again, that was the point in the first place.

A wiki is just the easiest way. Seriously. You won't have to worry about the coding and bugs (as mediawiki has little bugs anyway) and wiki stylesheets shouldn't be too hard to make.

Have you heard the new concept? I'm guessing not, since it takes things beyond what a wiki could provide by itself.

Not really. Care to explain? Also is there a general devpen forum somewhere which non-devpen-staff can access?

No there isn't a general DEVPEN forum anywhere. Vermillion just brought this up again and we should be able to get started soon.
