How did you get into Disgaea? |
|
I suppose I am a little unusual because I got to know about the way it works from Phantom Brave. I have to say that there are quite a few changes... some good and some bad, but I am glad I tried out Absence of Justice. Just from reading through here it seems there is a large following of Japanese players. I am American, one of my only complaints is that I can't get any downloadable content since I only have a 56k connection. I live out in no mans land so it is not available. Anyway, back to my train of thought. I originally tried out the Nippon Ichi games due to them looking and playing like a lot of the older school games that focus on play and not graphics as much. I love graphics as much as the next guy, but a lot of games seem to throw quality of play aside for fancy pixels. Another one of my big reasons I like these is it is hard to find a good turn based game now days. If it is not a button masher then you go to Civ or a few less popular titles. Hope to hear some interesting stories. PS, I have been lurking a long time, just never got in the mood to post till now.

Well, strangely enough, Phantom Brave also was my first real introduction to the series. I had been vaguely familiar with Rhapsody, way back on the PSX, but didn't remember much about the game (let alone that Nippon Ichi was involved with it).
My first intro to the series was through Disgaea on PSP. I skipped D2, since I couldn't find it anywhere, and then went on to play this entry into the series. Thankfully, D2 is coming to the PSP as well, so I'll have the chance to get a playthrough with it. I usually never play games in sequential order... ------------------- Neoseeker Big Brother Interview: "Eridor" quote

I used to watch the show "X Play" a lot. (back when G4 was Tech TV).
When I saw the review for Disgaea: Hour of Darkness I thought to myself "this game looks AWESOME". Sure enough, it's now my all time favorite game series.

I remember Final Fantasy Tactics being one of my favorite games and somehow I saw D2 before release and thought: "My god, another strategy/tactics game. I must have this". I then bought Disgaea 2, and now own all three.

re: How did you get into Disgaea? |
quote Fatal ErrorSimilarly, I was just on the FFT forum here on Neoseeker and I asked what other games were related to it. This was one of the major names they dropped. After playing the first one, I fell in love with the humorous dialog and characters and played through the second one (which was a let-down as far as dialog goes...). Then I just kinda forced myself to play this one since the dialog still was nowhere near as awesome as the first installment. -------------------

I happened upon a review in some gaming magazine (OPM or EGM or something), and though the review of it was small (half a page), they gave it good marks (I think 8/10 or something), and I liked the description.
I picked it up a while after that. Never looked back Man, I wish I could go back to the 'THIS IS AWESOME!' feeling when first playing the game XD Well, whenever an new game by NIS comes out that's like it, I get it, and I enjoy the best part IMO, getting into the game and slowly leveling up, acquiring your initial good gear, etc. After a certain point, the game becomes more about getting uber strong to take on powerful bosses (post-game bosses). I miss D1's style though, D2 and D3 just changed a lot ~_~ -------------------

At first I was like: PERRDERDERDERRRRRR FINAL FANTASY TACTICS WHY AREN'T THERE MORE GAMES LIKE THIS?
Than I played the translated Fire Emblem ROMs and found out why; the other big SRPG games were crap. Ouch, it still hurts. The pain. I thought the higher the number the better the game would get...but I was wrong. There was reason why Japan kept it; it's an embarrassingly simple and mind numbing series with little challenge or entertainment value. So, one day I was thumbing through a new game magazine my brother got for free and saw a tiny review of a game that stated "Strategy-RPG" as its genre. I read the article and it sounded nice. Got it and I was kinda disappointed by the art style. I thought to myself,"Eeehhhhh... looks REALLLY anime-cute..." Yet the dialog was a nice change from other games and more importantly, the game play was done nicely. It won me over. I couldn't wait for the next thing NI would come out with. Now I just want a PS3 to play D3 on. ------------------- ![]()

Ah, if you get a PS3, lemme know.
Don't worry about a HDTV, as far as disgaea 3 goes....It STILL looks like a PS1 title XD Well, you already know that, I'm sure. I'd like a return to a more classic style, the one D1 had, but eh, the games are still great. I like the art style for the characters. <3 Etna -------------------

I'm not sure if I'll get a PS3 just for two games. (The other is "Little Big Planet") I think I need at least five or so games for the PS3 to win me over.
I do see some changes in character design over the years. Characters and certainly the monster designs moved away from the "Halloween" theme that D1 certainly had. (My poor mumbling skulls...) ------------------- ![]()

I'm sure you can find a few more games easily XD
God of War III maybe? FF Versus XIII? Resistance series? Rachet and Clank series? ANything making you think "DO WANT!"? Meh, I still wish Etna followed the D1 style. I don't really like the changes they made to her character design >_< -------------------

So far those are the only two I would like to get. I'm pretty picky when it comes to games. (I only got three CD games for my Wii and 6 or Wii ware/Virtual console games.)

This friend of mine, or something, phoned me and said something about a new game he got. He said it was pretty badass, or something, and that he was gonna bring it over later to show me. While on the phone, I sifted through a few PSMs to find a review on the game, and I remember when I found it, the first thing I said was, 'Man, you weren't kidding, the graphics do suck.' At this point, I had that feeling of 'what a let down'.
Then I played it. It's too amazing. Yeah, that Halloweenish style was kickass. (<3ed Etna's boots) And yes, Thawed Atari, I also miss the mumbling skulls. The ones they have now just look like they started the day with a pot of coffee and no restroom break. ------------------- ![]()

Lol, it'll be a lot sooner than that. Well, they'll release another game before then, though whether it'll be under the Disgaea banner is another matter...
But I expect another Disgaea either next year, or the year after that. TBH, Kinda hoping for a non Disgaea title as the next one. Similar gameplay style, but not under the Disgaea banner.....Maybe more like Makai Kingdom? I dunno.... -------------------

I stumbled upon the game at a GameStop in a mall. I was just browsing and someone left a copy on the counter so I took a look at it, since the art on the cover looked sweet. I asked the guy about it and he said it was like FFT (which I haven't played) and it was surprisingly decent. So I bought it and enjoyed the heck out of it ever since! 1 is definitely the best. 2 wasn't as bad as people say. 3 is better I guess, but it's basically a rehash of the first one's story.
