[Team Guide] - Manchester United

Manchester United
[Team Guide]

.:: Introduction ::.

As most everyone here knows, I support Manchester United, and I've decided to make a team guide on them. I'll do my best to make it as helpful and informative as possible. Enjoy!

.:: Club Information ::.

.:: Basic History ::.

quote Wikipedia
Manchester United Football Club is an English football club, based at the Old Trafford stadium in Trafford, Greater Manchester, and is arguably the most popular football club in the world, with over 330 million supporters worldwide; 5% of the world's population. Average attendances at the club have been higher than any other team in English football for all but six seasons since 1964–65.
The club is also one of the most successful in English football; for over twenty years, since the 1986–87 season, they have won 18 major honours, which is more than any other Premier League club. They are the Premier League's reigning champions, and have won the Premier League/Football League 16 times. In 1968, they became the first English club to win the European Cup, beating S.L. Benfica 4–1, and they won a second European Cup in 1999. They also hold the record for the most FA Cup titles with 11.
Since the late 1990s, the club has been one of the richest in the world, and until recently had the highest revenue of any football club for several years running. As of 2007, the club has the fourth largest turnover in club football, but remains the most profitable club based on operating income. Manchester United also remains the most valuable club in the world. The club is a founding member of the G-14 group of Europe's leading football clubs.
Sir Alex Ferguson has been manager of the club since 6 November 1986. The captain is Gary Neville, who succeeded Roy Keane in November 2005

Wage Budget: £1.1M

With the players available to you, I believe that you can win. I recommend you select winner.

.:: Squad Guide ::.

.:: Goalkeepers ::.

Edwin van der Sar: Although at first glance his goalkeeping stats don't look that good, van der Sar is a superb goalkeeper; definitely worthy of a first team spot in the first season at least.
Tomasz Kuszczak: Quite the opposite to van der Sar, Kuszczak's stats look excellent, but surprisingly, doesn't perform as well as the more experienced Dutchman.
Ben Foster: A decent backup, but really nothing more, I wouldn't start Foster in many games.

.:: Defenders ::.

Gary Neville: Team captain and experienced full-back, Gary Neville should be able to hold onto a place in your team for at least a season or two unless you deem it necessary to purchase a new right back. Otherwise, start Neville on the right.
Danny Simpson: Although I don't believe that he is good enough to start in the first season, Simpson quite obviously has potential and should become a very good player for you. He'll hopefully be ready to replace Neville either at the start of the second season or soon after.
Wes Brown: Though others don't seem to rate him, I believe Brown to be a very handy player for your squad. An excellent defender, Brown's versatility increases his usefulness. I recommend that you hang onto him.
John O'Shea: Another versatile defender, keep O'Shea in the squad, and you should be pretty much covered in defence. He can play anywhere across the back and performs strongly and consistently.
Rio Ferdinand: Although Chelsea will come knocking on the door early in the game for Ferdinand, I suggest you reject all but the most ridiculous transfer bids. There are few more solid center backs then Rio Ferdinand as any experienced Football Manager played will see after a quick glance at his stats. Unless you get a bid in the region of £25M or more, don't let him go.
Nemanja Vidić: Although perhaps slightly worse then on FM07, Nemanja Vidić remains in the top ten center backs in the game. His last ditch tackles and brilliant headers have saved me on many occasions.
Gerard Piqué: Everyone knows this boy. There are few teams that Gerard Piqué would struggle to break into, but I don't think he should pay ahead of either Vidic or Ferdinand.
Mikaël Silvestre: Upon looking at his stats for the first time, my immediate reaction was that Silvestre was better then Evra. I don't still think this is true, however I recommend you keep this player because he is the best cover you have for left back.
Patrice Evra: My first choice left back, Patrice Evra is fantastic in defense and attack. Good at going forward, dribbling and getting a cross in, and also great at pelting back down the field to stop attacks. In my opinion, the best left back in the game.

.:: Midfielders ::.

Owen Hargreaves: A good tackler, passer, and marker, Hargreaves is also very good at shooting long and should be rewarded with a first team place.
Darren Fletcher: Not good enough for your first team, and probably never will be. Fletcher will be good backup until you get a few better players. Keep for a season or two.
Michael Carrick: If played correctly, Carrick can be a very valuable player for your team. Excellent passer of the ball and with training, can also be a formidable long shooter and good tackler.
Darron Gibson: Not the best of players. I'd recommend you sell him if you get a £1.5M or more bid.
Cristiano Ronaldo: The best dribbler in the game, also a very good finisher and passer. Super physically as well. If played as winger he will get a moderate amount of goals and loads of assists. If played as striker, he will gets loads of goals and a moderate amount of assists. His first team spot should never be in contention.
Nani: Basically like a slightly younger, slightly worse version of Ronaldo. Pretty much the same as him. Backup for Giggs and Ronaldo.
Ryan Giggs: Although he is definitely coming towards the end of his illustrious career, Giggs still has a season or two in him. Start on the left wing.
Anderson: A fantastic prospect. Anderson is a sublime dribbler and is a very good finisher. With the right training, he will become even better with time.
Paul Scholes: Unfortunately, Scholes doesn't seem to cut it on the new patch. Put him on the bench, but I wouldn't start him.

.:: Strikers ::.

Carlos Tevez: If played rightly, Tevez plays superbly. Give him a lot of creative freedom, make him very attacking, and make him target man with distribution set to run-onto-ball and he'll score bags.
Wayne Rooney: Not one of the most well known players in the world without reason, Rooney is a definite first teamer for you. Play him as a striker, but also as target man and huge creative freedom with through balls and run with ball often, he'll both score and assist bags.
Louis Saha: I wasn't impressed with Saha in this game. I tried him with a number of tactics, but he didn't seem to cut it.

.:: Recommended Lineup ::.

Van der Sar
Neville - Ferdinand - Vidic - Evra
Hargreaves
Ronaldo - - - - - - - - - - Giggs
Anderson
Rooney - Tevez

.:: Recommended Transfers ::.

The next section is completely my own opinions about what players you should buy and sell based on my own experiences.

.:: Recommended Sales ::.

Darron Gibson - min £1.5M.
Louis Saha - min £3M.

.:: Recommended Signings ::.

Billy Sharp - max £1.5M.
Toto Tamuz - max £1M.

I recommend that you sign Tamuz and Sharp because you lack good striker backup and they are both cheap excellent strikers. After this, I wouldn't sign anyone until January. I'm not going to tell you any other transfers though. I'll let you play the game for yourself.

.:: Recommended Tactics ::.

.:: Team Instructions ::.

This is the tactic that I'm currently using.

.:: Formation ::.

This formation works perfectly.

Suggestions welcome.

Nice to see you finally got around to getting Football Manager 2008 than, eh? The guide looks good, nice use of colour a good layout and some good information, than again you could add more information, like discussing the formation and adding screenshots of players, etc.

Yep. Finally.

Thanks for the suggestions - may add more in the future, but that's it for today at least.

Sounds good, just thought I'd inform you of why I said some good information. One of the reasons being that the recommended buys are people of whom should be playing Championship football, Mid-Table Premierleague would be pushing it for them. I mean United can get some much better players of whom would work well in their squad, maybe they are good though, this is where the screenshots would come in useful. Also another formation would be good, seeing as you can't stick to the same formation forever as the computer eventually figures you out and counters against it.

Tamuz is a very good prospect in the game, as is Sharp. At the start of the game, they're very good signings. If you don't get them and Rooney or Tevez are injured, then you're a bit stuck. Sharp got a hat-trick against Bremen for me as well. Looks like he'll become quality.

Veg1ta, what team instructions would you use?

Seems a silly thing to say as you've just done a whole guide on how to manage the team.

But overall a good guide and layout, look forward to seeing more.

re: [Team Guide] - Manchester United

its not really what team instructions i would use, but looking at those ones they dont seem balanced to me.dont get me wrong ur a team like man utd where most games ur going to dominate anywway, so the tactics ent really a issue.

as for signings i would rather sign palacio or someone for utd.even sell all the duds who arent world class lv and get a striker like aguero for 20 odd million, surely u can raise that much with utd.....
