Football Manager 2008: Network Games FAQ

Starting a network game Top ^
quote Instructions
  1. Load up Football Manager 2008.

  2. Ensure that you have the option 'Run As Server' option ticked in the 'Network' tab under game preferences every time you want to start or reload a network game.

  3. It is recommended that for network games you have 'Move Matches for TV' un-ticked in your preferences.
It is important that not only the host, but all clients have this option unchecked at all times.

  4. Select 'New Game' from the main menu as you would for starting an offline game.

  5. Set up your game to the preferences of your choice like you would for an offline game.
Be aware that more leagues you run, the slower the game will run.

  6. Now that your game is all set up you can give other players your IP so that they can connect to you.
You can locate your IP via the ‘Game Status’ screen or via a website such as www.whatsmyip.org

Joining a network game Top ^

  3. Select the 'Network' option to join a network game.

  4. Select 'Join Other Server' and then enter the hosts IP address to join the game.

I'm having problems hosting/joining a network game Top ^
quote Answer
It is possible that you cannot play online because your firewall is preventing you from doing so, in this case you could disable your firewall and then see (test) if FM works via online play. Obviously, some firewalls may also have configurations which will “allow” certain applications to bypass it. (Please consult your Firewall manual)

Also relating to your firewall, it is possible to “forward” ports on your router to enable FM to communicate, please note, there are many different types of modems/routers out there on the market and they all function differently too, however, if you require some more information about Port Forwarding, then please visit the following website : www.portforward.com/routers.htm and look for your modem in the list. The ports that require forwarding are 10093, 10094, TCP and UDP. (Please consult your Modem/Router manual if unsure. It is your own responsibility to forward ports).

If you are not sure what your IP address is then you can use the following website to find out : www.whatismyip.com/ (This is the address to give to all the people you wish to join your network game).

Does everyone in an online game need to be running the same version? With the patch or without? Top ^
quote Answer
Yes everyone needs to be running the same version of the game.

For example if you want to join a network game and the host is using the latest patch (8.0.1), you will need to have the same patch installed to connect to the network game. If the host doesn't have any patches installed and you do, you will have to reinstall the game to connect to the network game.

How do I regain control of my team? Top ^
quote Answer
Left click on your name or team and a pop up should appear - resume control of team x. Where x is the name of your team.

What do I do if I have two IP with a / in between? Top ^
quote Answer
This will be because the host has a router. One of the IPs is his/her internal IP and the second is his/her external IP. The host gives out the second IP to those trying to join.

When I try to connect a pop up saying "unable to connect to server" what do I do? Top ^
quote Answer
The host or someone connecting has not forwarded ports for their router so will be unable to join. Refer to "I'm having problems hosting/joining a network game" for information on how to forward ports.

I want to set up a game of FM online, do we need the same databases? Top ^
quote Answer
Everyone playing the game will need the exact same database in order to run a stable online game.

Information gathered from FM08 manual & SI forums.

Switch to the manager you don't want to control anymore, and choose disconnect from game.
