Silent Hill 5 is "very Western-minded" ... It's also influenced by Hostel!

This may disappoint some SH fans ...

quote
Recently Kotaku got their hands on a demo of Silent Hill: Homecoming and they left feeling impressed.

MTV.com has similar feelings towards the game's demo. Though they mention a few things that may disappoint SH fans, including the abundance of references to the Silent Hill movie and other Western gore flicks ...

quote
"Homecoming" opens with an opening very much influenced by "Hostel." Your character is shuttled through a grimy hospital, while unknown individuals are torn apart, their screams echoing as you're shuttled to what seems to be your doom. It's far less subtle than the openers of previous "Silent Hills". It's very Western-minded.

But back to the nurse, my favorite part. The animation on "her" was phenomenally disturbing. It certainly felt like The Collective took notes while watching Christophe Gans' "Silent Hill" movie from a few years back. Her movements are almost note-for-note the same. You want nothing more than to stab her so she'll stop moving.

Gawd, I wish the old team was making SH5. Because this new team sound so uninspired and unoriginal. They better come up with something amazing soon, because all I'm seeing is SH Movie rip-offs whenever new screens/videos are released.

I still hold out hope that this game is going to be good. I mean the old games were heavily influenced by Jacob's Ladder and The Mist (The story) among other things, so it's not like they were all that original anyway. The game will probably end up dissapointing a lot of people, but at his point in the series I think that's inevitable no matter who develops it. Either it'll be too much like the old games and get branded boring or it'll be too different and fans will say that The Collective have killed the franchise. Hopefully underneath all the rhetoric there'll be a great Survival Horror game.

Isn't it funny how a video-game-turned-movie ends up producing a video game slightly based off of the movie?

Anyway, the article goes on to state that "'Silent Hill' hasn't been on the top of its game for a few installments now. Maybe a fresh perspective is just what the series needed." and maybe they're onto something there. I'm not too bothered by the fact that they borrowed features from the movie, as long as they continue to steal the good aspects. And so far, they've done a decent job at that.

I don't know what they're talking about there. Every Silent Hill game has been good (with the exception of SH4 though it wasn't awful).

I have no problems with them taking monsters from the movie but the monsters need to have a reason to be there. And from the looks of it, it seems that the Collective has missed that point.

Oh well. I'm still going to buy the game and hope it's as good a sthe previous ones. Heck, I'll even be happy if it's the same quality as SH4.

SH2 and SH3 are both great. SH2 is arguably the best in the series.

Alot of people were disappointed with SH4 but I personally didn't think it was too bad of a drop in quality. I'd hold back on getting that one.

For the record, the same team made the SH game on PSP, which I own, and it isn't all bad. Besides the countless weapons you're given. >_>

This game does seem to be based more off the movie though, even the PSP game's Nurses were identical to the movie... -_-

No, they didn't. Climax made Silent Hill Origins, a UK team. The Collective were working on the original version of Origins, but it was looking so shitty that Konami completely scrapped it and gave it to Climax to redo the whole game.

Oh I thought this was being made by Climax.
Damn, this doesn't give me much hope for the game.

re: Silent Hill 5 is "very Western-minded" ... It's also influenced by Hostel!

Great, so we have Brits' tackling a Western themed horror game.

At that, Climax is not a 'great' developer.

You're going to get a lot of Clive Barker inspired "Hellraiser" like scenes here, not the style of Japanese horror the series has been known for. It may still be a decent game, but I don't see the need for them to slap Silent Hill on the title anymore. That almost limits what the game can do because they have to relate it to Silent Hill, and try not to piss off fans (like SH4 did). They aren't going to rake in big bucks like Silent Hill 2 did for them - that's what they are aiming for, and they're the ones that are stemming the problem, not the dev team.

I don't have a problem with Hellraiser blood, guts, demons, etc, but ditch the Silent Hill title. Let it be its own monster.

Climax is NOT making Silent Hill 5! They made Silent Hill Origins! The Collective is an AMERICAN team, The Collective is making Silent Hill 5!

re: Silent Hill 5 is "very Western-minded" ... It's also influenced by Hostel!

I will remain cautiously optimistic that SH: Homecoming will be good. There are alot of horror titles coming out this year and next year, but whether they'll be good is a totally different story.

SH: Homecoming is looking worrying with this new team.
Resident Evil 5 is looking more action-oriented than horror-oriented.
Fatal Frame IV will either have successful sales or be ignored.
Siren: Blood Curse will either be a vast improvement on the PS2 version, or as sucky as the PS2 version.

They're the four big horrors I can think of. This gen is either going to be a hit-or-miss when it comes to horror games.

Do you really consider those scary? The new trailer actually kind of proves her point, absolutely nothing creepy or disturbing about it.

Resident Evil 4 wasn't scary at the least bit. Well, maybe the iron maidens were a bit disturbing but other than that, I didn't find the game scary at all compared to the past series. And Resident Evil looks like it's going its direction. I don't care how manydisagree with me, compared to most other resident evils, I found RE4 to be one of the worst of the series.
