How to get Ubuntu and Vista x64 HP on the same computer |
|
Could someone point me to a walk though or post what exactly I need to do in order to get these two OS's installed.
I have Vista installed right now on one HD, and I want to partition my second HD and put Ubuntu on part of that. I downloaded and burned the Ubuntu .iso to a cd, but when I boot from it, it freezes right after the menu where it asks if I want to install Linux, Check the CD for errors...... Am I missing something that I'm supposed to do before running the cd? -------------------

Something may have gone wrong in burning the CD, but there's nothing you need to do before installing Ubuntu. The partitioner in the Ubuntu installation will allow you to configure your hard drive to where you can have both systems on the same computer. Check the CD to make sure there aren't any scratches or other defects on the data side of the disc and then check the CD for defects before installing the base system (provided the computer doesn't freeze again). If you have Vista x64 on your computer, then you should have more than enough RAM to run the installation, so that shouldn't be the problem.

quote AvalithCheck both sides of the disc. What you call the data side is merely 1 something millimeter of transparent material, the actual data is on the grey layer on the other side. (in other words: something is indeed wrong with your cd). ------------------- ![]() | |

I've tried burning the .iso on another cd, and the same thing happens. After I choose Install, the disk drive spins for about a minute, and then its stops and nothing happens. I've let it sit for about 15 minutes, so I'm pretty sure that at that point its basically frozen. Is there a way to install Ubuntu without using a boot cd?

I just installed Unbuntu 6.06 32bit in a separate partition same HDD and so far so good. When you burn your CD make sure you use the correct settings described from the link below when burning try this tool its what I used ....
http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/?page_id=5 follow these instructions with infra recorder...... https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto <---- copy & paste, neoseeker won't post the link for some reason now once you burn the CD and set your bios so the system will boot from the CD and load up Unbuntu from the CD which at this time Unbuntu is running from the CD and nothing is installed yet! now once you get to ubuntu desktop there is an "install" icon on the desktop just follow the lead of the install once clicked, you can partition and select which ever HDD you want from there also in about 20=25 minutes you will be surfing whit ubuntu. I don't know about the ISO install. Also if you want the most of Ubutu I recommend the 32bit version over the 64bit, many things wont install or are very difficult to get going in the 64bit choices are there via 64bit its more for advanced people. Try burning it at the very slowest speed possible, also use the check CD for errors option on the menu the CD boots to. (what point does it freeze at - after you choose an option, or before?)
