A pet huh? I've always thought of Arcanine as a dog, so here goes:
 @ Life OrbTrait: Intimidate EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk) - Fire Blast - Hidden Power [Grass] - Morning Sun / Flame Charge - Dragon Pulse / Flame Charge Introduction When many people see Arcanine, they quickly assume a physical attacker. Of course, it does have high-powered moves on the physical side, but one shouldn't forget that it has a base 100 Special Attack and access to some really good coverage on the special side. Moveset The moveset gets the best out of the possible coverage Arcanine cane have. Fire Blast is the needed STAB move and is preferred over Flamethrower due to Arcanine's need for power on the special side. HP Grass destroys most bulky Water types wanting to sponge Fire Blast. Morning Sun is a neat move that other special attackers like Victini and Heatran don't have access to. It is able to heal Arcanine's HP, thus negating Life Orb recoil. Finally, Dragon Pulse is a great neutral coverage move Arcanine can use. EVs/Nature/Ability/Item Arcanine needs a Modest nature for the power. It's also unlikely that Arcanine will want to stay in against other base 100 Speed Pokemon like Salamence due to the threat of a super effective coverage move. Intimidate is the preferred ability on Arcanine so it can come in on a few more things. Flash Fire is viable as well if your team has troubles with Fire type attackers. The EVs couldn't be simpler. Max Speed, Max Special Attack is absolutely necessary. Life Orb is the necessary item to give Arcanine a big boost in power. Other Options The main option to consider is Flame Charge. Without ExtremeSpeed, Arcanine can be easily revenge killed otherwise. It gains STAB and gives a boost to Arcanine's Speed which is a great way to finish something off. It can go over either Morning Sun or Dragon Pulse. HP Electric can be used if you fear Gyarados more than Swampert, Gastrodon, and Quagsire. Overheat is viable over Morning Sun for its immediate power. One can use a physical attack over Morning Sun with a Rash nature. Flare Blitz would be the best option as ExtremeSpeed is rather weak without investment. Timid (Naive) nature is viable to ensure you outspeed the odd Jolly Haxorus and Timid Hydreigon. Teammate Options This Arcanine is best used under sunlight as it will not only boost the power of Fire Blast, but it will also allow it to heal 66% of its HP with Morning Sun and weaken its Water type weakness. Use Flash Fire in this case so Arcanine can't be hit with boosted Fire attacks. Aside from Ninetales, a Rapid Spinner is very much appreciated. Forretress and Donphan work well under sunlight as Forretress won't live through Fire attacks anyway while Donphan can cover Arcanine's Rock weakness and switch into most Ground attacks. Venusaur likes Arcanine's ability to weaken most Special Walls to the point where Venusaur doesn't need to use up a turn to boost up with Growth. Sawsbuck is a good physical Grass type that likes sunlight. Other special attacking Fire types like Heatran, Chandelure, and Nasty Plot Infernape can also benefit from Arcanine's ability to weaken or outright KO their checks and counters. Regardless, Blissey and Chansey are major problems for this set. Mixed or physical Infernape variants can easily handle the pink blobs and enjoys the sunlight Arcanine is typically used with. Faster Dragon types like Latios, Latias, and positive natured Salamence can cause problems for this Arcanine as they can attack before Arcanine can hit them with Dragon Pulse. For this reason, Air Balloon Heatran is a great partner. It can wall Salamence cold while resisting Draco Meteor, Outrage, and take neutral damage from Surf in the sun. Gyarados can be a problem if you don't use HP Electric. Scarf Rotom-H can take a Waterfall in the sun and retaliate with a Volt Switch. It's a surefire stop to Gyara if it tries to setup on Arcanine as Scarf Rotom-H still outspeeds Gyarados at +1. ------------------- | |
