Old Socom fans-and new

What I really think this game may attract is fans from Socom 1 and 2(who loved the game play and liked the constant action of small maps) . And then fans from 3(who liked the graphics and large maps and it being realistic). I think this may merge all fans together, and they will really decide whether this games hype is all it's cracked up to be. If it appeases to both sides of the fanbase, I really think this game could get up there as one of the best games in history. I know right now as a fan of Socom 1, and 2, but not three, that I'm excited for Confrontation. And I'm sure fans of 3 are excited too. What do you guys think?

re: Old Socom fans-and new

Confrontation needs to do a couple of things. Since the focus of the game is on smaller, more personal combat (hence the name 'confrontation'), the game has to utilize gameplay features that help aid in frenetic close-range combat. The third person view needs to cut out much of that peripheral vision that can lead people to see around corners without actually leaning to see around corners. A closer environment will need it, or else the downsized scenarios won't really live up to the nature they were intended to. You won't be able to effectively use pop out tactics any more realistically than they have been doing in all the Socom games, even on the PS3. If they can create a first person mode, (with gun model present), and allow a server host to set the view options for TPS, FPS, or both, then people can get into that mix to their liking.

People have been using too many exploits in the Socom games which have detached the gameplay from resembling more realistic tactical situations. People also don't know the meaning of teamwork in general, and are too willing to lone-wolf rush everything. This is SOCOm, not Counter-Strike, and gameplay needs to be adjusted so that rushers get cut down pretty easily, so the emphasis on tactical teamwork is made present. There are a number of ways that can be done, but whether or not Slant Six can do that, let alone Zipper, is still untested water. Hopefully Confrontation will deliver as promised. Otherwise, it's nothing more than a downscaled Socom game with no campaign feature.

I don't like the idea of that. A small part of the reason the game can be so adrenaline pumping is that another player can pop out of a corner and get you at any time. Exploits such as this should be allowed into a video game. The point is to make the game as exciting as possible. I love games that get my heart rate faster. More realistic games, well... really don't get my heart rate up.

re: Old Socom fans-and new

Yeah, but Socom isn't based on science fiction, it's trying to be as realistic as possible, it's just Zipper's skill at game developing isn't quite up to par, as the Socom AI will instantly give away.

(JESTER!!!)

Actually, that does bring up another method I haven't seen used in a game with third person OTS style gameplay - have peripheral vision, yet blur it so only the center of the screen remains in focus. You'll detect something moving, and at close range the distortion wouldn't be as bad, but from far away somebody for example, in a ghillie suit hiding in bushes, shouldn't be so damned obvious as they are in the Socom games.

I also would like to see them cut out that auto-cam tracing crap which gives away your position when you kill an enemy. Considering the PS3's anti-hack protection (being that no third party devices are permitted to hack any software, just like Microsoft's Xbox and 360), there's no need. I hate having to snipe somebody with a silenced sniper rifle from 200m away, and still have all the work gone into finding that stealthy location, and then getting there, blown, just because I got one lousy kill.

By the way, if you have the means, you should try America's Army for the PC. It's free, and it will CERTAINLY show you that you can get your blood pumping when playing FPS military, realistically-based games.

re: Old Socom fans-and new

Not into too many FPS, but I like the idea of peripheral vision. But it would be easier to do with goggles. I don't want to see ruined attempts at peripheral vision before the use of goggles in gaming.

Maybe if it were so realistic, that it were like real life, then I'd get my adrenaline pumping, since being in a war is prolly scary as shi*! (If they could make it so that you would be afraid to die, then maybe more stealth and tactics would be used.) D : It will take a while before it were that realistic though. : P

re: Old Socom fans-and new

Goggles are harder to pull off realistically. All they have now is the blacked out borders or transparency which seems to want to emulate the idea I laid out earlier. Let me make a mock render, see how that works out.

Big pic, sorry but detail's a must.

The blur is from the soldier's perspective, not that of the camera, so his peripherals are centered to his perspective. It's not too blurry, like the guard tower and near the palm tree, but it's blurry enough so that in order to clarify movement you'll have to look and 'focus' on that area, in which sharpness would increase. You'll still be able to detect enemies standing up and running around pretty easily, and lighting can still make a kneeling soldier stand out against the skyline pretty easily, but those that are trying to be stealthy can finally be able to do so. Soldier's don't have perfect vision, but they have tools like thermal and night vision - let these tools take care of enhancing vision that we normally don't have. Our peripheral vision is not perfect because it is not the center focus of our eyes.

Being able to cheat out a realistic experience by camping near a corner of a wall and magically detecting incoming allies is bogus anyway, but with something like this, those that are trying to be stealthy have that advantage returned to them, while the run n' gun pawns still die first.

re: Old Socom fans-and new

That's not to bad actually. That would make for some real cool realistic gameplay, but it might make you dizzy from too much playing. Though after tinkering with it for a while, I'm sure it'd look very realistic. :( Is that lighting just to resemble sun down or something?

And the reason I figured goggles would work better, is because it would put your real life peripherals into perspective. Instead of the peripherals of the soldier's, it'd be your peripherals. Which would give you a feel of being in the game. How exactly would it be harder?
