Aberdeen are considering accepting Noel Whelan's offer to play for free for the rest of the season.

Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood admitted he got "the shock of his life" when he read Tuesday's Evening Express, in which Whelan said he would be willing to play for them for nothing.

Calderwood has been in Dunfermline since then, but plans to discuss it with Whelan when he returns to Aberdeen at the weekend.

"I got the shock of my life when I read what Noel said in the Evening Express," said Calderwood.

"He certainly never said anything along those lines to me before I came down to Dunfermline.

"I will look into it when I get back to Aberdeen.

"Noel is a quality player and a great guy to have about the place. If he is serious about signing for nothing I'm sure it would please a lot of people."

It is understood that Whelan, who didn't travel when the Dons first team squad went to meet up with Calderwood in Dunfermline today, is already considering offers from clubs in England.

He also turned down a short-term contract with Livingston because they couldn't agree terms.

But Calderwood made it clear that the Dons will only discuss a play for free deal.

"We have a tight budget and are working on using that to sort out contract extensions for several players," he said.

"But if Noel is keen to do more than train with Aberdeen we will consider it.

"Noel is a talented player who should have gone on to become a regular in the England set-up.

"He's experienced a few problems but has worked through them and is still hungry to do well in the game."

Discussions have opened with the agents of Kevin McNaughton, Jamie Smith, Richard Foster and Kyle Macaulay in an effort to get them to sign extended deals.

Calderwood said: "I doubt if anything positive will happen before the weekend."

Calderwood has secured the use of Raith Rovers' Stark's Park for training ahead of Saturday's SPL clash at Dunfermline.

"We were warned the pitches we use in Aberdeen are likely to be flooded because the snow has thawed," he said.

"With just five games left before the SPL splits, it's vital we prepare properly if we are to make the top six. I appreciate Raith allowing us to use their facilities today and tomorrow."

Barry Nicholson will miss the Pars match. He will be sidelined for between four to six weeks after suffering a broken rib in last week's SPL defeat by Celtic.

Dutch midfielder Ferne Snoyl is also a major doubt because of a calf injury suffered in that match.

The booking of Robbie Williams for Hampden had absolutly nothing to do with the SFA. Hopefully the Fareos game gets moved to Pitodrie as thats where the Fareos want it.
