Ajax aren't paying him the cut because he can't leave if they don't. It's another way for them to stall the transfer and hope we give up cos they don't want to sell up.

Ajax don't need to take the £10m guys. It's a good fee but they put the clause in the contract of Vertonghen when they were expecting to sell him for 20m or so Euros, not the 12m that is reported. The offered fee is lower than Ajax want (which is obviously due to his contract running down), but Ajax will not be fussed. They either take the fee or Vertonghen stays for another year. He is that important to the Ajax team he could be the difference in them getting another league title, winning a couple of trophies or getting into the Champions League again.

Ajax don't like to spend and prefer to develop players instead. The current Ajax defenders behind Vertonghen are young and still need another year to develop, so Ajax keeping Vertonghen gives them players the chance to develop further before they go into the team.

Ajax aren't in a position where they can be forced to sell him. Other players like Van der Wiel, Hamdaoui, Aissati and possibly Sulejmani could all leave this summer for transfer fees, so Vertonghen staying at them won't affect their finances, even though they would see him leave for free next year.

Whatever happens, he is a quality player. He would be a brilliant player to see in England, but it'd be nice to see him stay for one more year at Ajax.

This lad has never got anything wrong about Everton so I have no reason to doubt him. He said Liverpool offered him a very good wage but at Spurs he'll be on £65K+
