I got behind England teams when I was younger, mainly because I didn't fully understand the reasons why I'd feel so detached as I got older. And to be honest, it's only the last couple of years that I've really settled on my ideas of how I like football to be played and what I enjoy watching, so I feel only now can I be so critical of a style of play after reading about and watching varying different styles and enjoying them more.

I understand completely that so far Roy has got us the results we needed, you can't knock that. I just really do not like a side with England's potential allowing so openly the opposition to have complete control of the game. Whether it was France, Ukraine or Belgium, they all dominated large parts of the game while we sat back and made it as hard for them as we could. As for England's expectations I personally didn't think they'd get out of the group. I thought they'd get punished for their negativity, but it's worked alright so far. But in such a small tournament, with a little bit of luck it should never be too much of a surprise to see a side with England's quality reach a semi final.

I hope you're right about Roy and that a solid base is just the beginning as it is a great place to start. I have my reservations about him, I admit. I don't think with him in charge we'll ever play a progressive style of football. You say he's working with what he has got, I'd say he's working with what he has chosen. He left the likes of Johnson, Rio & Sturridge out because of the way he wishes to play. He plays Milner on the right instead of Walcott or Ox. He plays Steven Gerrard predominantly in his own half. He still plays 4-4-2. This is because of his style of football, not because his hands are completely tied.

And I fully appreciate your reasons for enjoying England games. My greatest experience with England was funnily enough when they got knocked out by Germany in the world cup. It was my mate's son's christening, so we were all together in the pub together. Celebrating the goal, abusing the ref and just having a good laugh throughout.

it would have been different for you two though, because growing up you were supporting a successful team (not that its a bad thing necessarily, its a plausible explanation)

speaking for myself, spurs in the 90's up to about 2005 were a pointless team, like in a transfer window we could spend a tenner or ten million and we already knew we were finishing 10th, there was nothing to look for at club level for me so i was always much more excited about england, i went to the old wembley to watch england a few times with my dad and i've clung onto that, i have felt less of an affinity in recent years with england, whether that's natural progression or tottenham once again having a purpose in life i don't know, but the connection is still very strong and something i hopefully never lose.

i mean seeing campbell, sheringham, anderton play for england was exciting times, even little things like Le Tournoi before france 98 were exciting times

thats why i cant understand why people would want england to lose (this isn't specifically aimed at anyone it's a wider point), even if you don't care about international football why would you go out of your way to say or care that england do bad. then its the weak excuses, 'i want england to do bad because the players are crap' this defies logic. 'i want england to do bad because of the media' go to hell, form your own opinion and care about that not what the daily mirror says, 'i want england to do bad because the players are twats, bad representation of the nation etc' because joe public is so *bleep*ing perfect right. my opinion i reckon people say they want england to fail for attention or to look 'oh so different look at me setting a trend' rather than genuinely feel it. if someone doesn't care about england football team then they don't care, thats fair enough but its a big jump from not caring to actively supporting the opposition. also on a separate note people who adopt other national teams for no reason or a weak reason 'my nan/aunt/dog/whatever is from there', that's *bleep*ing pathetic.

I'm not english, I don't have any affiliation whatsoever, but I've always wanted england to do well tbh. Maybe because england v colombia was the first football match I saw. Didn't have any interest in 2008 because england failed to qualify rofl.
