Fwiw, my view of it is pretty much that yes, United now can't compete and offer the same wages that City can for players.

Good.

Because for years, nobody (not even Chelsea pre-Abramovich) could compete with the wages or even fees United were paying for players. No they're being outspent, certain sectors of the fanbase want to complain about unfair finances.

The argument I hear people make to defend United's early spending when nobody can compete is that they made that money through winning and exploiting a lot of the commercial side of the game in the prem era before anyone else. Personally not sure the latter point is a positive one with regards to the state of football. Plus with hindsight it can be held as a factor which made investments such as that into City inevitable.

Wilshere would be thrown into that group too tbh.

Cleverley's did as well bizarrely.
