I've honestly never want an England manager to succeed as much as Roy and not because I think he's good or like him. Just because the media in this country are horrible and I'd love him to stick two fingers up at them.

The Sun's front page tomorrow... Can we just get the tabloid media to agree to shut up for the summer?

i dont care what he did for fulham, liverpool, sweden, his honeymoon or his dogs birthday. pull as many stats out your arse that can actually fit up there but the fact is hes got the job, hes clearly been appointed and touted for a long time for a reason, get behind him for *bleep* sake

Happy for Roy, and I hope he can do a good job. Highly experienced manager, especially at international level which is vital. I genuinely don't know why people so desperately wanted that hypocritical arsehole Redknapp). He was a mid table manager all his career, who drove Pompey into administration with his ludicrous transfers. He shon for a season at Spurs, now he's apparently the perfect English manager. You're saying Redknapp is a midtable manager which is fair enough. But what is Hodgson then? He's the definition of mediocrity. None of the English managers are particularly great choices. Only in England would fans be happy to see the back of someone with Fabio Capello's CV and replace him with someone like that.

I wanted to wait until everything was confirmed before posting, and I'll start off by saying I generally believe I'm quite balanced and un-biased with my views, but what Hodgson has done for us over the last 18 months I'm obviously looking at this through rose tinted spectacles, but with that out the of the way, here goes (some bits also noted from ZM.net’s article on Roy – he can put thoughts into words much better than me)...

If we are going down the road of ‘must be an Englishman’, this is the correct appointment. This is the first manager we’ve had who has international experience, which for me automatically puts him 2-3 points ahead of any other contender, and has been willing to test the waters abroad, granted he’s not always been successful both here and abroad but he’s learned new cultures, ways of playing, how certain teams may line up in certain situations.

Harry is not a tactician, will he motivate the players? Sure. But should a player need motivating to play for his country in a championship for crying out loud? Van Der Vaart once said there’s a white board in the dressing room but we don’t use it, and Redknapp himself has said he doesn’t owe much stock to formations. Now hypothetically (I know, I know..) let’s say England get through the group stage and come up against Italy or Spain, would you want someone who tells the players to ‘go out there and enjoy it son’, or do you want someone who works relentlessly on team shape to attempt to out-fox the opposition?

Hodgson works on team shape every day in training, with him leading the drills, Redknapp has his merry band of coaches to do all that malarkey. We are well below Spain, Germany and Holland, and also you could chuck in France and a few others in there too. Our expectations have gradually dropped as we realise we are nowhere near the level required to play an open, expansive game, something which Redknapp would be keen to do. Hodgson has been a master at getting the very best out of average sides and overachieving, is that not what we need now? Uruguay in the Copa America – solid defensively, Greece in Euro 2004 – solid defensively, Uruguay and Ghana at the World Cup – solid defensively. That’s exactly what we require in this tournament and probably for a few more to come until the grassroots level of coaching reaches an acceptable standard and we start bringing through more technically gifted players.

Will the football be boring? Yes, very likely, but what else can we realistically afford to do? We are an underdog in these championships whether we like it or not. I would be pleasantly surprised if we made it out of the group. The one slight concern I have is that as Hodgson likes to work on shape, defensive and attacking drills so much, that at International level you aren’t afforded that time, although he’s been there and done it with Switzerland, so again, he knows how to cope with it.

There are justified (at times) criticisms of Hodgson – his insistence of 4-4-2 can be to his detriment and should things go awry that will be the first level of complaint in his direction, his use of substitutions is also very poor, often leaving it until very late in the game. I don’t for one second buy into the media hype of ‘the fans’ choice’ being Redknapp – I’m yet to actually meet anyone who thinks he would be the best man for the job – but he is pals with the media and it’s difficult from the outset for Hodgson because he isn’t Redknapp. A 0-0 draw against France in the opening game would be a good result, but what will the reaction in the media be? You could hear the knives being sharpened yesterday.

Hodgson has international experience, tournament experience and a proven track record for dragging footballers across the boundaries of over-achievement. Given England’s drift into mediocrity, he is the ideal man.

I sincerely *bleep*ing hope not! If he goes I dread to think what will happen, and with Hodgson there I guess there is a possibility he goes because he will know first hand what he's like, but from what the local rags have said The FA are looking for a 'name' and thankfully Ashworth probably isn't that *yet*.

fair points, but i was aiming more for the team shape/organisation and understanding what each role is, what the guy next to you has to do, but they are valid points.
