I just don't see how Uniteds spending power can be that big with a huge ever-growing debt hanging over.

Uniteds net spending actually hasnt been that outrageous, and you have to remember that the majority of transfer fees arent paid in one installment, most of Berbatovs was i believe, but before that the last fee paid in full was Veron from Lazio. What makes it possible for United to spend is maintained success, which will be difficult to maintain once Ferguson goes. The debt is growing yes, at a quite alarming rate. And while most clubs do have debt, there arent really any with a debt as massive as Uniteds.
