	Log in to remove this advertisement Xavi cannot tackle though so what good is he as a defensive midfielder A DM is meant to aid the back 4 with defensive duties. Defending is not part of Xavi's game. -------------------

	So Pirlo's a DMF and doesn't tackle. Not all DMF's have to tackle. I prefer to call one the holiding role [tackling and the like] and one a deep lying playmaker [Pirlo and Xavi like]. -------------------

	Pirlo's not that bad at tackling and breaking up play though with his defensive duties. I see what you mean, but i dont think Pirlo's that bad and i dont think Xavi is any use as a DM. -------------------

If anything Benitez should have got praised for the tactical decision, even though I'm sure many of us could see Kaka would rip apart Alonso before the game even began.

	it completely depends on other factors. As i would have IMO the best defence in the world i feel the 'attack is the best form of defence' approach would be successful. if the other team had 2 central midfielders they would have a defensive mid on kaka and then xavi could easily cover the other central midfielder that has to fill the gap in the middle of the park. ------------------- Twitter / The Oval Log

	My midfield is obviously the best. Mascherano to protect the midfield, Essien another runner who can track back but with more freedom than usual. Fabregas or Scholes to dictate the tempo. Ronaldinho or Riquelme to create for the forwards. ------------------- Visit the Sports Forum!

Hamman had a bigger impact because of the tactical changes brought about by his position (taking a DR off for a DM). But Gerrard played better because he was the driving force and truly everywhere, especially when he more or less played DMR kind of role. You know what that doesn't make sense

Although Pirlo can defend a little bit, I still would say he isn't a defensive midfielder. Deep lying playmaker yes, but I would not trust him or Xavi for shit as my only midfielder to sit back. Kinda agree with Johnny Boi's point about Carrick and Scholes, because that is a kind of unbalanced midfield, but Carrick is actually decent a defending (not as good as the likes of Mascherano or Gattuso but better than someone like Lampard or Pirlo). And Scholes will at get back and attempt to defend a lot, even though he's not good at it, which is more than some attacking midfielders will do.

	A couple of changes in my team: Buffon Ramos - Vidic - Zambrotta Mascherano - Gattuso Kaka - Messi Guti Torres - van Nistelrooy Subs: Van der Sar, Alves, Ashley Cole, Carrick, Van der Vaart, Cristiano Ronaldo, Toni. Viva Guti! Also, Carrick is basicially DM materiel. He can tackle, has pace and his sharp to take over defensive duty. He would a better choice then Pirlo and Xavi.
