I too am interested to see how Ronaldo does; I think his mindset will rest heavily on whether or not United win the CL final, though. Hoping to see Nani impress as well.

Switzerland will surprise so many people, lol. Czech Republic might not even score a goal.

I would have chosen Carvalho tbh, it'll just put more pressure on Ronaldo and I don't believe that having a player who is prone to hissy fits as the source of leadership is a very good idea.
Yeah, ask Arsene Wenger

re: Euro 2008: Group A

Hello, and welcome to the first edition of Shape's needlessly elaborate predictions. Today we shall be discussing the first to kick off of the four groups in the tournament. That is, of course....GROUP A
First Fixtures: Switzerland vs. Czech Republic 1-0 Portugal vs. Turkey 3-0
The hosts send their fans into raptures with a narrow win in a tightly-contested opener thanks to a headed goal from Philippe Senderos, following which the Portuguese confirm their status as serious contenders by disposing of the Turks in a heavily one-sided affair. Captain Ronaldo opens his account for the tournament with a long-range effort whilst Quaresma and Maniche each add another, but Deco continues to look out of sorts following a dreadful season at Barcelona.
Second Fixtures: Czech Republic vs. Portugal 1-2 Switzerland vs. Turkey 2-0
With Deco promptly dropped and replaced by João Moutinho in midfield, the Czechs put up a fight as Koller's header cancels out Ronaldo's simple opener, but without the inspiration of Rosicky they soon run out of ideas and are unable to come back as Almeida scores on the hour mark. Following their drubbing on the opening day Turkey look horribly out of sorts and an efficient display from the hosts sees a brace from Alexander Frei seperate the sides and assure Switzerland's qualification alongside Portugal before the two sides meet in their final game of the group stage.
Third Fixtures: Switzerland vs. Portugal 1-1 Turkey vs. Czech Republic 1-0
Both sides take the opportunity to rest key players as Portugal and Switzerland collide, but at the same time realise just how valuable winning the group could be. Nani opens the scoring early on in his first start of the competition, only for a later Vonlanthen goal to level the score - and he again gets through on goal in the last minute only to be tripped by Pepe, who is lucky to escape with a yellow card. Frei steps up to take the penalty...but is denied by Ricardo! The final whistle goes and Portugal win the group on goal difference, whilst elsewhere Turkey salvage some pride and complete the whitewash of the Czechs through a stunning Nihat free kick. Final Standings:
1.) Portugal ¦ 4 ¦ 7 2.) Switzerland ¦ 3 ¦ 7 3.) Turkey ¦-4 ¦ 3 4.) Czech Republic ¦-3 ¦ 0

He's class....on FM Seen some champions league clips and he looked good mind, not sure on consistency or international form. quote 1111
Slightly off topic but I just bet £3 on Portugal, Croatia, Germany, Romania, Italy, Spain, Greece to win their first games & Switzerland and Czech Rep to draw at odds of 910/1. Unlikely but it could happen. I got into a habit of doing that on multiple prem games in the second half of the season. Frequently I missed out on up to a grand by one or two games, kept telling myself I'd get it one day but it just...doesn't...happen Haven't learned my lesson tho.

Don't think Sky has any of the matches. It's even between BBC and ITV. BBC has most of Germany's group, ITV has most of Spain's group, the other two are even and the quarters and beyond yet to be determined.

Probably because he's an FM phenomenon who isn't a regular starter...and plays in midfield And yeah Rob, can't stand them, will prefer the ITV coverage...and neville makes it sound all the more enticing, haha.

Gutted for Frei, hopefully he'll be back for the next couple of games but judging by his reaction his tournament's over Great start to the game which petered out.

Swiss were extremely unlucky. First pen shout shoulda been given, the stoppage time one not at all though.
Ref was shit all round, so inconsistent. First half he's afraid to book players even Gelson after that horrible challenge, second half he even books Vonlanthen for a slight nick which was his first tackle. Daunted by the occassion perhaps?
BBC coverage is just awful, I lol'd at the bloke who isn't motson saying Vonlanthen shoulda just kept it down when he hit the bar...did he see how high the ball was and that it was still rising?
Oh and Cech looked awfully suspect at times. The ball didn't seem to move much but I think he's got it fixed in his mind that it does, hence a Van der saar-esque flap at Frei's early shot giving a chance but for offside, and dealing poorly with crosses later on.

Good first-half, Deco's been one of Portugal's best players, I think Shape' prediction will be wrong. It was more poetic my way, rising to the occassion without their spiritual leader

Bonswiga looking good tbh Looking foward to seeing him play for chelsea next season I'm afraid tbh, soon as I heard "evra for the right" I wanted him at united. And Portugal will win the tournament I've said that from the start, another good display.

Also from what i saw of the Portugal game, their defence looks abit shakey, Pepe especially. I can't see them winning it, once they come up against Germany they will be out imo.
Portugal to beat the Germans on penalties

Difficult to predict today so I'd just had a pot-shot of sorts, £2 a-piece on Portugal 2-0 with Nani first scorer and Turkey/Czechs 1-1 with Nihat scoring first.

Portugal are on ITV4. Both are on at half seven because with the final group games it means teams are on a level playing field in terms of knowing what they need to get through, and all the matches are as competitive as possible.

It's hardly stupid...for example take group b, if it was goal difference not head to head then germany could win it by simply stuffing austria despite having been beaten by croatia, which means they deserve to come ahead of them.

Goals is one way but results is another. In a league it's obviously goal difference but when there's only three games it just wouldn't make sense.

I dunno. I think the rule would have worked better if the fixtures had been better arrange. The way it was done with most of them, the two strongest teams before the tournament played each other in the second game, meaning that first place would already be virtually assured. The only exemption is France Italy, which Holland ruined They're arranged randomly I think though..

Cech's thoughts on the official ball have clearly played on his mind way too much.
I said that after the first game, he'd let it get to him.
