Chapter one: A Surprising Journey
"So, where ya' headed?" The man in the bunk across from him said. Link looked up expecting to see one of the merchants said to travel through "The City" but was surprised to find that it was a young man. He looked to be the same age as him but had thick dirty blonde hair that made his dark brown eyes go perfectly with his tanned skin. "Um...Loc Lac" said Link, his voice not as deep as most seasoned hunters, even though he had seen his fair share of bared fangs and scorching hot breath. "Ah, 'The Great Desert Oasis'." He mused. "And what exactly might you be headed there for??"
"What else?" I replied "I'm going for the hunt!" The man chuckled and said, "Aye, aren't we all!"
Then Link felt it, it was as though a feeling of tension passed over him in a wave of water, sending chills down his spine. He then asked the man “excuse me sir- “. “Oh, please” interjected the man. “Call me Areriff”. He said while offering his hand. Link took it and said “Are there any monsters out here?”.Areriff looked puzzled, “Are you saying you’ve never heard of the-”, He was cut off by one of the sailors. “JHEN MOHRAN!!!! IT’S ON THE STARBOARD SIDE!!”.
“Well whaddya know?” Areriff said through a half hidden chuckle, “looks like you get to see the beast for yourself”.
He looked Link up and down, “what are you wearing?” Areriff said. ”Um Rathian mail”. Link said curiously. "why?”. Areriff frowned. “Hmm, got a helmet?” Link shook his head. "I wear an earring that I’ve had all my life” I Explained.. “Oh good, then your earlobe should be safe.” He said while rolling his eyes. “C’mon, I’ll meet you topside" He shouted while grabbing his sword and shield and racing through the hatch to the deck.
Link reached behind him and grabbed the plainly eastern looking longsword that rested beside his knapsack. Then, after grabbing a few whetstones and a potion, he dashed up the hatch after Areriff.
At first Link thought it was a joke, something the sailors did for newcomers. That is, until he remembered the wave of tension that had passed over him earlier. This was no joke. Yet there was nothing around for miles except for sand, a few dolex and something big. But before he could ask anything, there was a rumble as loud as an earthquake breaking a cavern in half and letting a jet of sand ricochet off the cavern walls.. Then he didn’t just hear it, HE SAW IT. It was as big as mountain and just as real and similar looking. Not only that, BUT IT WAS SOARING 100 FEET ABOVE THE DRAGON SHIP!! Then before he had a chance to react, giant spears were thrust into his hands by a man yelling “TAKE THESE TO THE BALLISTA CANNON!!” Link followed his finger to where he was pointing and saw what looked to be a giant crossbow. He ran over to the giant crossbow and gave them to a man who started loading them and firing at the beast's tusks. Suddenly, the monster came in close to the ship and nudged it nearly knocking off half of everyone aboard.
Link looked around for Areriff and found him by a box of cannonballs. He ran up to Areriff and was about to ask what to do when he shoved a cannonball towards him and yelled, "Take this thing." He pointed at the explosive packed ball of lead. "Over to one of those cannons!!” He pointed to one of the twin cannons on either side of the ship. He took the cannonball and loaded it through a hatch at the rear of the cannon. as soon as Link closed the cannon it exploded, sending the cannonball streaming with smoke, directly at the creature's back. The sound of the blast was ear shattering. He staggered from the blast and tried to make the ringing stop. He was NOT doing that again. As Link looked up, something on the monster caught his eye. There was something running along the back of the Jhen Mohran, more monsters? No, it couldn’t be, but it was. There, on the back of this colossal beast, were hunters running along his back and mining as though it were some sort of ore deposit!
The idea of climbing up the back of a monster that could very well pass for a mountain didn't sound too appealing. High places were not Link's specialty. He then noticed that the monster was swimming through the sand right alongside the Dragonship. That must've been how the hunters on it's back had gotten up there, he could easily make out a ridge on which they could have used to climb. Not wanting to be useless, Link quickly looked for a spot along the side of Jhen unto which he could release his blade. He soon found a spot and unsheathed his weapon. He swung the Longsword over his head and down towards the reptilian-like skin of the Jhen Mohran. Expecting to feel the ridges split beneath his swing, he was surprised when he connected with something metal. He silently prayed to the Ancients that this beast was not made of Machalite. His worries were soon extinguished when he realized his sword was still above his head. His eyes scanned the edge of his sword only to meet another sword and another set of eyes, familiar ones at that. “Someone should’ve told you," Areriff started, a wide smile playing across his face. “We gather the materials off of a Jhen Mohran before attempting to kill it. You see, the Jhen Mohran is a valuable vessel of resources and is a sign of good harvest. It brings with it valuable materials. In fact, Loc Lac is said to have been created by a Jhen Mohran crashing into a dried oasis and opening it up. Thus making it possible for a city to prosper."
He looked from his blade, to the pick axe Areriff held out to him, then to the Jhen. "Great." He thought, "Now they want me to climb the damn thing." But before he could even reach for the pickaxe, there was a roar so loud that this time he was sure his eardrums were going to pop. Then it stopped. Had his eardrums popped? "LEAVE IT BE!WE MUST MAKE HASTE FOR LOC LAC!" Screamed the captain of the Dragonship. Nope, he couldn't be that lucky. When he finally looked up the jhen mohran was diving beneath the surface of the sand, then it was gone. Later that night Link was told many stories about the “Jhen Mohran”. Many included the loss of friends or the finding of a very rare and extremely valuable treasure from jhen known as the “Earth Dragon’s Gem”.
Later that night Link slept uneasily. Glowing red eyes, a snapping jaw full of razor sharp teeth with chunks of blood caked between the gums. This is the image that would haunt him until the day he faced the nightmare.
Chapter 2: Arrival
Link later learned that the sword and shield that Areriff used was known as a “Jhen Kodachi” a weapon whose metallic blade was forged using the materials of a Jhen Mohran. He showed Link its destructive power by slicing through one of the ship’s ballista spears as though it was the stem of a flower, one swift movement and it was in two. Link also told Areriff of his own weapon's origins. He told him how his mentor, a mercenary turned master hunter, named "Russel" had given it to him as a departure gift when he decided to become a hunter and leave his home town of “Ravinata”. Link also spoke of how soon after departing he had been living off of a jungle where he hunted “Rathians” that were pestering a nearby village. It was from their armor smith, that he had his armor made. As for his earring, he had had it since his birth, a gift from his father who was killed by a monster no one had ever found. The damage done to his body was unlike any done to any hunter before. His mother had always told him to never take off the earring for the day that his father took it off and gave it to him was the same day his father was killed. The village smithy told him it was an earring made for Great Hunters, and that he would always be able to sense everything’s life force within range of his own. “Which is how you knew about the Jhen Mohran before that sailor announced it.” He finished.
“Yes,” Link said. “It’s been that way for as long as I can remember.” Link nodded off, lost in thought. “Well, we should be there by tomorrow.”Areriff said, kicking off his boots and breaking the focus spot Link had found on a bent nail that was hanging out of the ship’s built in benches. “I can’t wait, I got a bunch of materials on my last quest and I’m just itching to take ‘em to the smithy”. He said with a child’s excitement in his voice. It was then that a thought occured to Link. “Hey Areriff, it’s my first time in the city." Link admitted rather sheepishly. "Where should I go first?” Areriff thought about it for a second. “Go to the Guild Center located left of the entrance. Since we'll be heading in from the docks, you'll need to go straight through the tavern and onto the main street. There's guide Felynes who'll be able to help you as well. Once at the guild center, you’ll get your hunting license and a personal felyne.”
”Oh okay.” said Link as he tried to memorize all of the info that was just given to him.
They had been sailing through a sandstorm for the last 3 days, and the sound of the sand grinding against the hull now helped to lull Link to sleep, but it didn’t get rid of the nightmares. What happened next took all of us by surprise.
The force of it woke Link up. He had about 3 whole seconds to realize what exactly he was feeling. It wasn’t as large as the Jhen Mohran’s life force, but it was VERY strong. Then he realized that “It” wasn’t just an “It”. It was a lot of little “Its” all close together. Then, just as he figured it out, it happened. Link managed a “GEH-“ before he was hit with chunks of what used to be the ships hull as the boat started to implode. He was thrown off his wooden cot and onto the floor which was now tipping forward. He started sliding towards the hatch to the deck. He heard Areriff let out an “AAGH” as he too was slid forward along with the other crew members that were suddenly woken from their much needed rest. His hand suddenly felt warm and he looked down to see it covered in blood. “My blood?” Link thought. No, it was coming from the hatch! Then he heard loud snaps as the flooring began to bend and break. It bent until it was a straight drop into what appeared to be a black abyss. Link desperately reached for something to grab onto, his gauntlets scraping at the wood but finding nothing. He fell expecting to hit sand or be caught on outcropped benches. Then his boots found solid rock, rock that he had known was nearby but never expected to set foot on. It was suddenly quiet and still. Then there was an “Oof” as Areriff landed next to him. “Hey!” Link half whispered. “Where are the others?” They looked up at the same time and saw the crew members that had shared the room with them all hanging for dear life from the ships benches. It was then that they realized that the boat had stopped tipping and breaking. They opened the hatch to a horrid sight. A crew member greeted them with blank and distant eyes. Protruding from his chest was a jagged piece of the mast which had splintered off. It was as long as Link's Thunderclap and as thick as his arm. It was a nerve wrecking sight and happened to be the only way to exit the ship. They tried not to look any longer than they had to as they passed by the corpse.
As they exited the ship the survivors were welcomed by many concerned people wondering what had happened. After being treated to any wounds they had sustained they were told that the Dragonship had crashed straight into the port of Loc Lac. Apparently, the sandstorm was so bad that the navigator had trouble seeing the Docks. The ship was half way onto the dock and half destroyed. Luckily, the impaled sailor was the only casualty. Still shocked they all set off to do what we needed to do. Before leaving Areriff said, “Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask you, what’s your name?”
“Link” He said.
“Well, ‘Link’ if you’re ever up for some good ol’ hunting let me know.” He handed Link a card with his name and a jumble of numbers on it with a small colored box. “Once you check into the Guild Center you’ll know what to do with that.” He explained. And with that we parted ways. Link to find the Guild Center and Areriff to his own journey.
Though, Link wasn't planning on letting his first friend here walk entirely out of his life.
When Link finally found the Guild Center he went up to the desk and told them that he was new and needed a license to hunt in Loc Lac. They made him one while wearing the fakest smile he had ever seen. Then they gave him a whistle. “This is to call your Felyne. You get your very own felyne that will deliver messages and find your friends for you whenever you request it, so long as you have their hunting cards." Link held up the card Areriff gave him and she nodded then gestured toward the felyne. Link held the card out and the felyne took it carefully as though dropping it meant he'd become a rathalos's breakfast. Then the Humanoid cat creature took slid the card into a holder on his neck. He placed it in slot "1". The pouch on his black and brown fur covered neck almost looked like a miniature version of the pouch you see on leather armor.
"“Thank you very much.” said Link.
"Oh, and here's this." She handed Link a map of the city and circled a small rectangle while saying, "Go here if you're interested in renting a room."
After getting lost and ending up in a place selling extra digits and fake eyes, he finally found the place. It was an Old shack that was patched up to be livable but not well furnished. The man renting out the rooms told him that the four cabins shared a toilet. This didn’t sound too bad…. Until he learned that the man in room “4” had eaten a bad batch of apto dumplings and brown rice. This was going to be a long night.
Its breath, fouler than any dung or decay. It’s forehead producing a slimy sweat substance that beads down onto the soft cracked earth where It’s talons curve into the ground like scythes that have been slammed down after a hard day's work. A blackness emanating from it. A life force of the purest kind.
Chapter 3: Jhen slayers Part .1
"Please!" He begged. "I need to defeat a jhen or my girlfriend will never stop mocking me! I promise I won't faint, I'll even stay inside the hull, making sure everyone has what they need!" Areriff and Link looked at the hunter before them. He was wearing an odd mix of Chainmail, Hunter, and a single piece of Great Jaggi armor. His Greatsword was dull and needed upgrading. Nevertheless, they would take him. They had their newfound titles to uphold. It had been 5 months since their arrival and crash landing into the city of Loc Lac and they now had a reputation. Areriff, the Precisionist and Link, The Uni-Blader. Together, they were the Army of two, Twin destroyers, the Jhen Slayers. Both were completely decked out in Jhen's complete armor set, except for a few minor details on each one's behalf. Link didn't wear the traditional Jhen helm, instead he wore only his mysterious earring and used only his Thunderclap which was now upgraded to be even more deadly. Areriff wore the entire Jhen set, but used a Sword and Shield that were found in a Rustshard and restored to a point where they could be used again. They were presumed to be from long ago when it was mainly large elder dragons that roamed the world, for it used an uncommon element, Dragon. It was festival time, which meant the guild put out special quests that allowed low ranked hunters to fight the mighty beast. Why did they do this? Because, this was the time of year when the newborn jhens were said to bask close to Loc Lac, along with their Elder Parents. "Fine" Link said finally. "But it'll be 50 pieces of honey. That's 25 pieces each for me and my partner." The man's jaw dropped. He look as though he were just told that he was going to lose his arms. Then he regained his enthusiasm and said, "Great! I'll go borrow them from my girlfriend, I'm sure she'll loan me the honey! I'll be right back, Don't go anywhere please. Areriff and Link both chuckled and started talking about what they needed to bring on the quest when suddenly a man approached them. Link sensed him before he saw him and looked in his direction. He could see nothing of his face. The man was clad in a full white and beastly looking armor set that looked as though was made up of white sponge and bone that glowed in spots with purple light
. His weapon, a Hammer of sorts though it looked like a big ball of flesh someone had bolstered to a steel handle. The flesh was covered in small spikes and had a purple vein running through it.
"So," he said, "you two must be the great 'Jhen Slayers' I've been hearin' about."
Areriff got that grin on his face that Link knew only too well. "Why yes, and you must need help slaying a jhen," started Areriff, "and, for a mere 50 honeys, we'll help you out of your 'sticky' situation."
“Heh, sounds fair.” He reached for his satchel and drew from it, another satchel. This satchel he tossed to Link who barely caught it. Link gave the bag a feel and could make out the flat jagged edged things that he knew were pieces of honey dried for storage purposes. There were roughly 80 pieces, far more than they asked for. Link sensed something was amiss. “Pleasure doin’ business with ya!” Areriff shouted after him as he walked away. “Ah, nothing like making business and taking names.”
"Wait, thats not the expression is it?" said Link.
"Who cares?" replied Areriff. "It's all the same in love in war!" Link slammed his face into his palm. He really needed to get Areriff one of those "Book of 100 Phrases" that he saw in the shop windows. But that would have to wait, the boatsman was announcing departure. They had work to do.
The sands were calm. Then again, when were they not? They possessed no waves, this was an ocean of solids. No liquid existed here, that is, until Link and Areriff were upon the beast of the sands. Only then, did it seem that this desert would know rainfall. "Oi Link!" Areriff yelled from the racks of ballista ammo. "Where is it? Where is our target?" Link closed his eyes and started probing the surrounding sands. Not with his hands, but his spirit. He had learned how to use his earring to find life forces even if they weren't visible or within earshot. He felt his whole soul spread out across the sand. A flat wave, rolling as though someone had poured a vapor over the land that seeped in and out of the earth, caressing every grain and fiber with utmost care. He felt the Jhen. He felt the ridges along its body, encrusted with sand and smoothed from a lifetime of grinding through the sands. And, It was big.

Oh! I've actually met Link online! About fifty times... and there are THREE of him! Wow!
I won't lie; one of the characters in my slowly-progressing fanfic has a very popular online name... but he's not the protagonist.
Spoiler:a rough draft from a random place in the story
__Dante, seeming to have no surname, was cautious and reserved; he never took risks unless they were absolutely necessary. This, everyone knew, could be either a blessing or a curse.
Yes, I know... BEHOLD! THE POWER OF THE MAKESHIFT INDENT!!!
