During routine maintenance, Cryptic Studios uncovered details surrounding unauthorized access of account information dating back to 2010. The developers of City of Heroes, City of Villains, Champions Online and Star Trek Online say that account names, emails and encrypted passwords were accessed. Should your account have at risk, Cryptic will have reset your password and emailed you on what to do next.
From the press release:
"The unauthorized access included user account names, handles, and encrypted passwords for those accounts. Even though the passwords were encrypted, it is apparent that the intruder has been able to crack some portion of the passwords in this database."
How an online company with databases of supposedly secure private data can go over a year and a half without realizing they've been hacked is astonishing. How many times has online information been accessed and stolen without users knowing about it?
Luckily for me, and this is kind of sad, even though I received the Cryptic email I won't have to reset my passwords. Since the invasion happened in 2010 I've had to reset my online passwords at least five times due to other hacking incidents through other online services. My 2010 are beyond useless. Hooray for me?
