Raw damage vs Elemental damage vs Sharpness

you can look up the exact formulas in faqs, but basically, raw damage is calculated using the type of weapon, type of attack,hitzone, defense and sharpness. it has more dividers than elemental damage. sharpness affects all damage, but the amount of blue sharpness simple tells how long it will stay sharp. its something like yellow sharpness deals 1.0 times the damage, green deals 1.125, and blue deals 1.2. im not sure about the exact numbers but i think those are fairly close. check the guide for an in depth explanation.

When using a GS elemental damage is almost useless. There was a guide written on it somewhere that said a GS with 60 raw will do the same damage as a GS with 500 Thunder element and no raw damage when used on a Tigrex's head, which is weak to thunder.
Raw damage is better by far.

thats because in the damage formula all elemental damage is divided by 10...here is an example taken directly from the faq linked above


Raw Damage Formula:
Let's say you were walking around in an Elder quest and a Rathalos decided
to drop by and start some trouble with you. You run up to it and do an
unsheathe attack with your Blue Ogre Sword on its head.

[ATP]: 182 (Blue Ogre Sword, 182 Raw Damage)
[TYPE]: .18 (Unsheathe attack, 18%)
[SHARP]: 1.25 (Blue sharpness for melee)
[HITZONE]: .80 (Rathalos head hitzone is 80)
[DEFENSE]: 1.0 (Elder Rathalos has 1.0, can be left out)
[RAGE]: 1.0 (Elder Rathalos state is normal)
[VAR]: 1.12 (All SnS attacks are multiplied by 1.12)
[CLASS]: 1.4 (All SnS, class multiplier 1.4)

[ATP x TYPE x SHARP x HITZONE x DEFENSE x RAGE x VAR] / [CLASS] = Total
182 x .18 x 1.25 x .80 x 1.0 x 1.0 x 1.12 / 1.4 = 26

and now have to figure out the elemental part to calculate your

Elemental Damage Formula:

[ELEMENT]: 500 (500 Dragon Element)
[ESHARP]: 1.0625 (Blue sharpness for element)
[ELMZONE]: .30 (Rathalos' weakness to dragon at head is 30)
[DIVIDER]: 10 (Defense and Rage are normal)
[VAR]: 1.0 (Only Element Variable is for Dual Swords)

[ELEMENT x ESHARP x ELMZONE] / [DIVIDER] = Total Element
500 x 1.0625 x .30 / 10 = 15

So...

[RAW] + [ELEMENT] = Total Damage
26 + 15 = 39
