From IGN:
quoteApril 5, 2007 - The new Final Fantasy Tactics game doesn't begin with a snowball fight. But like its predecessor, it does start off in the real world as the main character, Luso, finds himself locked away in a library as punishment for pranks pulled at school just before the start of summer break. He writes his name in an old book and gets sucked into the fantasy world of Ivalice.
A closely guarded secret project when it was announced late last year, Square Enix is finally sharing details on Final Fantasy Tactics A2 with the Japanese press, in anticipation of the game's 2007 release (and possible playable debut at the upcoming Square Enix party in May). Our latest look comes from Famitsu, who also scored an interview with the game's production staff, including director Yuichi Murasawa (formerly the menu designer on FFXII).
The world of Ivalice should be familiar to Square Enix fans, as it's the same world that was featured in the original Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and in Final Fantasy XII. As prominently shown in FFXII, Ivalice is a world with a variety of races and classes, including Hume, Moogle, Viera and Bungaa. The different races will be featured in A2.
Unlike FFXII, though, the storyline in A2 is meant to offer the feeling of a "light adventure," Murasawa disclosed to the magazine. Upon being sucked into the world of Ivalice, Luso merely decides to do a little adventuring rather than immediately thinking that he has to go home.
Square Enix is working on some new twists to up the strategy in the game's grid-based battle system. The number of character jobs has increased. Famitsu provides a look at a samurai-like job and a magic knight, although the actual identity of these two is still a mystery.
The game also promises some tough boss fights, with some bosses so big that they take up multiple squares. Some large-scale standard enemies will appear too, revealed Murasawa. These large foes have special abilities that make approaching them dangerous.
You'll also find a bit more to do outside of battle. To the original's world map, A2 adds new "area maps." These regional maps feature multiple battle locations and a town, where you can gather information and purchase items and equipment. The world map itself will, as with the original, feature enemy clans moving about. Murasawa says that we can expect some other points of interest as well.
The lid is now off on A2, so expect further details, hopefully with screenshots, to start appearing shortly.

quoteAs one part of the newly-branded 'Ivalice Alliance,' the sequel to Square Enix's popular strategy title made an appearance at the Square Enix Party 2007 convention in Japan rearlier today. Known as Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 (aka 'A2'), the game seems to be coming along well, and is in good hands as the director for the first Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Yuichi Murasawa, has returned to help legions of gamers move little people around little maps in non-stop battles for territorial supremacy.
If you've played anything from Tactics Ogre to Final Fantasy Tactics (Tactics Ogre and Ogre Battle were originally designed and developed by a team called Quest, which was later procured by Square, which led to the development of Final Fantasy Tactics for PlayStation) you'll be instantly familiar with the interface and game mechanics in A2. You still learn moves and spells depending on what weapon you equip, but now, thanks to the advent of a dual screen game machine (the DS), managing your inventory and checking up on your skill progression is no longer a nightmare -- you can battle on the bottom screen while you manage inventories, job classes, and equipment on the top.
When we pressed Murasawa in an interview about the first game's tendency to reward enemies with a "15 percent" chance to hit you with a hit 85 percent of the time, he claimed it was either a bug or just bad coincidence, and that we should expect the same mathematical calculations to return, based on what direction the enemy is facing, who has the terrain advantage, and a myriad of other factors.
The law card system returns, although this time around the game seems more forgiving, as the cards affect the enemies and not you. Another major improvement is that you don't gain experience until after the battles are complete and you return to your party management screen, at which point all the experience is spread evenly among your entire roster of characters, neatly avoiding the previous game's problem where players would not want to use lesser characters to fight battles, which meant that only a small handful of characters ever became powerful enough (via leveling up) to remain useful in battle. Now, since everyone gains the same experience for victorious skirmishes, players can bring out whatever job type they feel is appropriate for the fight.
In the previous game, whenever you killed an enemy, be it man or beast, they'd leave a skeleton behind, or some sort of corpse-like remains, which a Judge would relocate at the end of every turn, ideally moving it out of the potential path of a player character. This time around, no bones will be left on screen, as Murasawa explains that the screen just looked cluttered with all that stuff on the small grid.
The graphics look quite similar to the first game, although the resolution has been bumped up a little. You still can't rotate the screen, though, to gain a better perspective in some areas, like you could in the original Final Fantasy Tactics on PlayStation. Characters also seem to move a hair slower than they did in the GBA version, although not to the point where it's actually a problem.
As ever, you pick up quests and whatnot in the pub, paying a small fee for the privilege, with the reward for a victorious mission more than compensating for such initial investments. Murasawa tells us that A2 will break things up a little more from the previous game's nonstop battle-heavy focus, by adding minigames and other diversions in case players need a break from the main game. With the game scheduled for a 2007 release, we'll have more comments from Murasawa as well as more details as they're released of what could be the next great strategy RPG. Just a quick review type thing I found on 1up.com. Also, one thing I noticed while watching battle videos on www.ffta2.com is that when you kill enemies, they drop a little pouch. Which makes me think, is there some kind of looting system like in FFXII?

Holy crap! I don't really have proof to post, other than the link to www.ffta2.com, but on there, it shows two new story characters as being Vaan and Penelo from FFXII!
I'm VERY happy about that, because Penelo is my favorite FFXII character.
