Azeroth needs its champions of the Horde and Alliance once more. After spending a few years drinking with the Pandaren in their homeland before dethroning Garrosh as Warchief of the Horde, Vol'jin and Varian have sent the champions of their respective factions to Draenor to stop the Iron Horde's invasion. That mission quickly turned into fighting Gul'dan and the Burning Legion. After defeating Archimonde, the Legion set its sights on Azeroth once more. Announced at Gamescom, World of Warcraft: Legion sees the return of not just the Burning Legion, but Illidan Stormrage as well. Illidan is bringing his demon hunters along for the ride, giving players a new hero class to battle the demonic hordes of the Legion. The expansion was rumored to launch shortly after the upcoming Warcraft movie, but it appears things will be looking more like Warlords of Draenor as Blizzard has just announced an August 30 release date.
Pre-orders for Legion have been open since the opening cinematic was revealed at Blizzcon in November. The latest World of Warcraft expansion had a deadline date of "on or before" September 21, but today's announcement moves the date forward by just under a month. Some fans have been skeptical of the latest expansion thanks to drastically declining subscriber counts over the course of Warlords of Draenor. Blizzard claims Legion will restore much of the fantasy for player classes that players felt has been ruined over the years. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but faithful fans don't have much longer to wait.
The Warlords of Draenor expansion originally had a December 2014 deadline before receiving a November launch, which may alarm some of the more skeptical World of Warcraft players. Fans who pre-ordered Legion will be able to start playing their demon hunters early, as Blizzard plans to unlock the starting zone for pre-orders before the expansion itself launches. The Burning Legion is coming, and only the fury of five million Ashbringers can save Azeroth. World of Warcraft: Legion will land like an infernal on August 30, 2016.
