If your favorite (successful) video game series hasn't been turned into movie idea yet, just sit tight and wait for it to happen. For now, billions of Warcraft fans out there are either cheering or weeping as Blizzard today announced plans for a World of Warcraft movie. Responses on the official forums have been mostly positive, though.

With release tentatively set for 2015, the upcoming flick will be made by Legendary Pictures and directed by Duncan Jones, son to pop legend David Bowie and a self-proclaimed "real gamer." He also directed Moon and Source Code, if you happened to enjoy either of those.

Filming is expected to begin this year, based on a script by Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond, K-PAX). Producing the movie will be Blizzard and Atlas Entertainment's Charles Roven and Alex Gartner. Interestingly enough, Legendary originally had Spider-Man (the Tobey Maguire ones) director Sam Raimi in mind for the Warcraft flick, but that went out the window with Raimi moved on to work on Disney's Oz: The Great and Powerful.

In an old interview, Duncan Jones noted his jealousy over Raimi having the opportunity, and said that he expected Warcraft to be "the launch of computer games as good films." Guess he probably flipped when the project fell in his lap. In that same interview, Jones called himself a "real gamer," describing how "insane" he is and his tendency to "stay up all night playing games" despite working all day.

With a budget of $100 million, we're hoping Jones can work some magic here. The film is a huge step up for him, considering his last two films and their limited budgets.

We really haven't heard all that much about the Warcraft film since BlizzCon 2007, when Blizzard and Legendary revealed that the movie would likely be live-action and focus on an Alliance perspective in the Horde-Alliance war before the events of World of Warcraft. All of that could be completely moot by this point, however, and anyone hoping to hear more about the renewed project will just have to wait.
