When it came out I thought the game would be such a great hit with a lot of exposure like Halo for an example... But I really didn't hear anything about the game when it was released. There weren't many reviews of anything big to promot it. It seemed as if most people didn;t really care... maybe because the high price of it when it first came out.

Then when Playstation decided the hard drive was useless it pissed me off. Even though I was one of the first to buy the game I never got to actually play it since I was too young to have a credit card and didn't have anyone who'd let me use theirs.

And when I tried to resell the game with the hard drive no one wanted to buy it. I just assumed the game wasn't that big of a hit so I gave up o it. Well now since there is a PC version I was thinking of buying it again but may people are telling me to forget it... that I'm better off playing Morrowind or something. Is the game still worth playing?

The question in your title is actually answered by the folks in the thread a few down the list. There's still a good sized community, but it's not as large as some other MMOs out there today, and not as packed with people for some of the smaller ones.

It still has a very healthy amount of players that isn't really growing, nor shrinking. Just like any successful MMO gets in it's later life.

It is a solid game that you need a lot of patience to play as it takes a lot of time to do some of the things required in the game, such as levelling, or travelling from one area to another - in terms of distance, not load time.

I think it has a nice community. There aren't too many people, yet the areas aren't dead either.

With Wings of the Goddess coming out soon, it may attract more attention back to the title. =]

I personally think they should start merging some servers so that there is a larger amount of people playing on each one. There's no real downside (other than farming) to large population in FFXI, it becomes a lot easier to find a group and everything.

You personally think that, but i'm on one of the biggest servers on FFXI.

There are like 5k people on each server and if you merge servers, zones will become way to laggy and you will time out, 32 servers are enough right now. Wings of the Goddess will bring people back, etc.

I personally still play on Odin, and haven't moved since the PS2 release. I have 2 Jobs at 75 and 8 merits to my name atm, so merging is still a bad idea. :]

Well, they could perhaps merge some of the less populated servers, but there seems to be enough players to go around as it is right now anyway.

And yeah, Wings of the Goddess might bring back some old players too.

It's a good game, but I have stopped playing. This game is pretty time-intensive and I am a more casual gamer. Which is sad because I really did enjoy playing but can't spend hours at a time to play.

I recommend it stil though if you can afford/enjoy that kind of commitment.

But let me tell you, if you are playing the PS2 version, the first time you set it up, you should be prepared to wait a long time for all the updates to be downloaded and installed... I recommend doing it overnight or before you leave for work or something...

Im going to get this game tomorrow.. so i'm hoping pple still play it >.> But keep in mind it just came out for the Xbox 360, meaning that it might stick around for some time ^.^
