add a border overtop of all your layers, its decent for just starting with gimp. text needs to be readable, and bg does not contrast well with stocks.

Just good old photoshop (cs2) and my brain

Its not that good so don't credit your brain that much.

The edges with bolts are the only decent parts, the rest look cheezy and cartoony and boring. the middle leads to believe as if something eye catching should be but sadly its only dull colours and a bad orb.

Still, finally got PS. So just being messing around with the filters and stuff, all defaults obviously been as I haven't had chance to download anything as of yet. Anyway.

yeah i feel ya on going over the top with it, and it doesn't say combat just "evolved" damn is the mc really that hard to see? i guess from my constant hours playing halo2 i can too easily recognize the mc, meh... i digg it, but ill prolly clean it up later today.
