I don't know, I have never done it before. The ones that come included with Gimp should be all you need though. They can be rotated, colored, and resized manually. If you really want, you can make your own patterns though. Make a new image that is square shaped, fill it with the line pattern, alter it how you want, and then save it with the .pat file extension under the patterns folder (C:/Documents and Settings/USERNAME/.gimp-2.6/patterns for XP or C:/Users/USERNAME/.gimp-2.6/patterns for Vista).

today i pulled up gimp and when i clicked on a tool, the dialogue opened up as a new tab instead of opening up on the toolbox tab... can someone help me fix this?

Hmm, I would suggest reinstalling it (Download Link). What version and OS do you have?

You will need to do tutorials and stuff to learn how to make cooler banners. Just Google "Gimp banner tutorials".

I didn't even know you could do vectors on GIMP. Are you sure you don't mean cell shaded?

Hmm, well I just tried saving something as .svg and it wouldn't work.

OS = Operating System. Like Windows Vista, Windows XP, Mac OSX, Ubuntu Linux, etc.

If you have Windows, go to the control panel on the classic view, then go to "Add/Remove Programs" (XP) or "Programs and Features" (Vista). Find Gimp on the list and uninstall it, then install it again.
