Blingage87 - Photoshop doesn't have the "open as layer" option like GIMP does. Instead you open whatever image you want as a new layer as a new document, resize it to your liking, and then drag it onto your banner's canvas. That's the way I use, at least. Copy&paste could work too I suppose.

re: [Help] Official Photoshop Help Thread

There are two ways really to adjust filesize. When you're done and ready to host, go to file > save for web. You have two main options; .gif and .jpeg. If you select to save it as a .gif file, then to the right you will see something that says "Colors" and then next to it a box with a number in it that has two arrows. It should be set to 256 default. To lower the filesize (kb) then just lower that number. If you choose to save it as a .jpeg file, then there will be a slider on the right that says "quality". Obviously the lower that quality slider number is the lower the filesize (kb). Keep moving it around until you get what you like (the kb size should appear near the bottom of the preview of the graphic when in the "save for web" page). Hope it helped.

The effect around the logo could also be recreated using the default brushes as well.
Brush in a white/light yellow color a little in the area where you want the effect to be with some of the different sizes of default circle brushes (make sure they're not the fuzzy ones). Then you'll right click that layer, hit "select layer transparency". Now make a new layer and move it underneath that one. Select a reddish/red-orange color and go to select > modiy > grow and select something like 1 or 2 pixels. Ok it, and then fill that in with the paintbucket tool. Go to filters > blur > gaussian blur and move around the slider until you get something you like. That should somewhat resemble the effect around the Superman logo if you followed it correctly (or if I explained it correctly).

There are tons of options, really. You could try brushing, smudging, filters, gradient maps, C4D renders, etc. Do you have anything specific that you'd like to be able to do? Otherwise you're going to get a pretty generic response.

Ok I need a little help. I'm following a tutorial where I need an X brush. I've tried downloading a few sets, but none of them are compatible with my ancient PS7. So now I need to make one... Only problem is I don't know how. Who wants to help me out?

How do I smudge with a regular layer? I don't get what you're saying. How can I save an "x" as a brush is basically what I'm asking here.

Ok well, I made a new document, typed an X, got it to my liking and went to edit > define brush, then named it "x brush". Now where is it and how do I use it? >_<

I find that when that happens to me, deleting the text layer (saving the image as a .psd) then closing & reopening Photoshop corrects the problem. You could try that if you'd like xeggie .

re: [Help] Official Photoshop Help Thread

Looks like whoever made that banner used the pentool. How I use the pen tool (probably different from other people, I dunno) is first I get out the pen tool (should look like --> ) and plot an anchor point by clicking somewhere outside of the banner's boundaries. Then I usually plot another anchor point somewhere else across from the original anchor, still outside of the banner's boundaries. Now between the two anchor points is a line. Somewhere on that line, click your mouse. An anchor point will appear again, this time with two little "handlebars". You can drag those around to make bends in the path and whatnot, and you can also move around that anchor point by holding down CTRL and clicking on the anchor point and dragging it where you want it to go. The line should move and bend as you move the anchor point around. Keep moving it around/adding more anchor points until you like your shape, and then click your brush tool. Select a circle brush, usually you like to use the 1px brush, but the person who made the mushroom banner used the 3px brush I believe. Now click on your pen tool again ( )and then right click somewhere on your banner. Select "stroke path" and then on the dropdown select "Brush". Ok it and voila. Rinse and repeat until satisfied. Let me know if that made sense. XD

Hm I do not know... Is it because you have have the whole layer selected? I don't know, I've never had that problem personally. :/

^ No I think the white appeared before he even stroked the path.
Shortie is probably correct.

No Ecto5, you are wrong. That is in fact the line tool. I figured it out now.
Alternately you could just plot two points with the pen tool where you want the ends of your line to be and stroke the path to your liking.

I'm assuming they came in .zip folders correct?
Right click the zip folder > extract all. Then go to my computer > local disk > program files > adobe > photoshop CS3 > presets > brushes, then drag and drop the extracted files.

Who wants to help me install a plug-in? D:
I acquired the topaz vivacity plug-in and have no idea how to load it up. I'm assuming it's similar to how to install brushes, however when I get into the plug-ins folder there's all these subfolders like filters, effects, etc and I have no idea where to put topaz vivacity.
Some help would be appreciated. XD
