Stay-at-Home Mum VS. Working Mum


The question of who makes a better mother has always existed - does the mum who stays with her kids all the time do a better job than the employed mother when it comes to parenting? Or is it the other way round? Does the employment of the mother have any effect on the children and the family in the first place?


Let's start with the stay-at-home mums. They get to be around their children the whole time, which means they'll witness all their kids' first actions, first words, etc. Also, there's popular belief that the children of stay-at-home mothers are healthier because with her being around all the time, she gets to keep tabs on what they eat...and if they become sick she can give them her full care and attention without having to worry about a job she might need to finish. Furthermore, the children of a stay-at-home mum get a sense of security from having at least one parent around all the time, and they have less psychological problems which may result from "lack of love or family closeness".

However, the mother might get cranky from spending time with her children the whole time, which doesn't give her a lot of "Me Time". It's also not easy for her to try and get employed after her children grow up a bit, because she's going to be out-of-touch with the new developments in the work fields, and she might not get hired easily because of her lack of skills.


As for the working mums, they have a piece of mind knowing they're contributing to their families, and it gives them an added sense of security lest something should happen (divorce or death of husband). The working mother earns the household a second paycheck, which means a larger income that can allow room for better food to be bought and a better lifestyle to be achieved. The extra money can also be used to go on family trips and could go into future savings. Going to work also allows the mother to go out and interact with other adults, thus enhancing her social well-being. And when the mother is at work, the children can be placed in preschool/day-care centers, where they make new friends, learn how to interact with other care-givers...and they become a little more independent.

On the other hand, a lot of families don't have money for suitable day-care centers even with the second paycheck. They may end up having to put the child in a cheap center which tend to abuse the kids, thus causing a psychological damage in them. The mother also will feel too worn-out when she gets back from work to even sit down and play with her kids, let alone spend time with her husband, which might make him feel neglected. Furthermore, if a child falls ill, she will have difficulties trying to take care of him and at the same time trying to keep up with her job.


I would like to know what other people think of this. Do you think staying at home with the kids is the better choice? Keep in mind that some people have no choice but to go to work everyday, because we're not in an ideal world and many people have financial problems.

Few weeks ago I went to this "champions" thing to look for a job. They help you with interview skills, and that kinda stuff.

When I went their the second time, I went expecting to be asked a bunch of questions, then be sent home until they call back, saying they had gotten me a job interview.

Well as it turns out, they only do that for people looking for a CARRER. And right in the middle of the thing, both me and the guy asking me questions about myself were like "WTF am i doing here!?"

In the end I left with a bunch of paper showing websites that might actually help me out.

I been to one of those and they are useless. All they tell you is just shit you can look up on the net or figure out yourself. *bleep*, I even had a useless class for that before. We rarely did work but once in a blue moon and just mainly watch movies. I think even the teacher thought the class was pointless. There was no math..No history...No english but unless you would count the mock interview he gave us. Easy credit though. :P

Incedentally, The name of the Wind, which I took with me on my trip, is the greatest fantasy novel of all time. Ever. Go read it. Buy it, borrow it, I don't care. It's actually making archetypes and forms work and is awesome in casual worldbuilding. To create a subject for everyone to get in here. I personally like serious subjects so here goes: Should women on welfare be prohibited from having more children while on welfare? Some would say more children should be prohibited because it is another mouth the mother can't afford to feed, others say that it is her right to have as many as she wants.
