Information Thread! Read All about it!

This is the article that got this forum here.

quote EuroGamer
Nintendo's Katsuya Eguchi has confirmed that a Wii version of Animal Crossing is in the pipeline - but there's no word on a release date yet, since they're still deciding how the whole thing's going to work.

Speaking to IGN, Eguchi said: "We're still just hammering out the concepts. It's not playable yet... Right now we're currently considering our options in terms of what we can do with the various features of the controller and through WiiConnect24.

"You could have someone visit your town even when you weren't actively playing and maybe leave you a letter or a gift," he said, echoing comments made at Nintendo's pre-E3 press conference.

"Also, through Wi-Fi Connection, players could play simultaneously."

Eguchi confirmed that they're looking at ways of making the game work with the Wii's remote controller, stating: "Basically it could become potentially your axe, your shovel and your fishing rod. You can imagine what can happen there.

"Again, we don't know if this will happen for sure because it's kind of a trial and error process."

As for when the game will be out: "That's yet to be determined," said Eguchi.

Not to much information, but it looks like we might be seeing some more soon. ^^

GDC 06: Animal Crossing Revolution: Design Philosophy
Series director Katsuya Eguchi illustrates the design philosophy of Wild World, and touches on Revolution development.
by Mark Bozon
March 23, 2006 - While the major press conferences may be over here at Game Developers Conference 2006, that doesn't mean there isn't more to talk about. In an Animal Crossing lecture titled "Is That a Franchise in Your Pocket?" series director Katsuya Eguchi spoke his mind regarding the Animal Crossing franchise as a whole, as well as the limitations (and innovations) that result when moving a franchise from the console hardware over to handheld.

The majority of the lecture dealt with the necessary changes in Animal Crossing 64 (and Cube), as well as the obvious additions that resulted in a hardware change. However, during Eguchi's conclusion the director had a few words on the upcoming challenge of bringing the Wi-Fi-enabled DS version over to Revolution. While no major information was announced, the Nintendo philosophy is shown once again in action. Eguchi had the following to say:

"Much like the conversion from the console Animal Crossing onto DS, we are now exploring how to bring what we have developed in Wild World onto Revolution. This time it is about bringing the world we've set up on DS over to the console world of the Revolution."

The majority of Eguchi's lecture was about the focus on delivering the right software for the hardware, illustrating how popular games such as Nintendogs, Metroid Prime Hunters, Animal Crossing and Brain Training used the many aspects of DS each in their own way. The Revolution quote may not be much, but it is a look into the philosophy of design.

E3 2005: Animal Crossing Revolution
Is Nintendo's life simulator franchise headed to its next-generation console? Details here.
by Matt Casamassina
May 19, 2005 - Nintendo is planning to take its popular life simulator franchise, Animal Crossing, to its next-generation console. In an interview with IGN today, Animal Crossing DS's producer hinted that a future Revolution version is a possibility. He later confirmed the news.

Animal Crossing enabled GameCube owners to live in a virtual world, manage a business, and grow to maturity. The title also offered a unique connection to the Game Boy Advance. Using the link cable, owners of Nintendo's portable could visit Animal Island in the GameCube title. Then, they could download the Island to their Game Boy Advance and continue playing on the go.
IGN asked the Nintendo producer of the in-development Animal Crossing DS, Katsuya Eguchi, if a similar mode would be available in the DS title. His answer suggests that a connection between the DS title and a still-unannounced Revolution sequel could emerge.

"The reason why we created the Animal Island was to give something for people to take with them on the Game Boy Advance," Eguchi explained. "Maybe with the DS we'll do something similar between the DS and Revolution."

In a follow-up interview, Eguchi confirmed that Animal Crossing Revolution is in development.

Nintendo's Revolution console will be Wi-Fi enabled out of the box, which means the system can wirelessly connect to the Internet for online gaming. This, of course, makes it the perfect choice for an Animal Crossing sequel. The nature of the franchise's mechanics have always revolved around community functionality.

More as it develops.

Animal Crossing (Wii) is a video game for the Wii console currently in development by Nintendo EAD. [1] Little information about the game is known, but it can be safely assumed that it will feature the same basic premise and gameplay as other Animal Crossing games.

In a recent interview Katsuya Eguchi stated that "someone could send a letter from their cellphone or from an email address on a PC to the Wii, and then the player living in the town in Animal Crossing could receive that letter..." [2]

[edit]
Speculation
The new capabilities of the Wii controller will most likely be used, possibly for fishing, bug catching, hole digging, slingshot shooting, watering flowers, or tree chopping.

It is also likely that due to the Wii's online capabilities, Animal Crossing (Wii) will have features that take advantage of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, in a similar fashion to Animal Crossing: Wild World for the Nintendo DS. In an IGN interview, Katsuya Eguchi, the man in charge of the development of Animal Crossing (Wii), discussed how his team is exploring potential ways to take advantage of the WiiConnect24 feature, such as allowing friends to visit your town or leave messages while the machine is in standby mode. [3]

At E3 '06, Nintendo's President, Satoru Iwata, used Animal Crossing as an example of the capabilities of Wii Connect 24. He suggested that the constant availability of new events and items will make the Wii gaming experience something that is fresh everyday. This leaves the imagination of waking up to new items in your game that aren't on the game disk and playing Animal Crossing forever!

In an interview with Kikizo, Nintendo executive Katsuya Eguchi let a few tidbits slip about what all is in store for Nintendo's next console, Wii. In the interview, he goes on to mention a little bit about Animal Crossing for Wii and the need for peripherals to maximize gameplay.

On Animal Crossing Wii, Eguchi had this to say:
"Another application might be someone could send a letter from their cellphone or from an email address on a PC to the Wii, and then the player living in the town in Animal Crossing could receive that letter".

While this isn't a confirming report that Animal Crossing Wii will have the same features that Microsoft is planning to implement onto their Xbox Live campaign, it does give some insight as to what's cooking in Nintendo's mind. Another interesting comment was on the matter of how the players would connect with each other online:

"There probably will be Friend Codes for the Wii version, however, we're not so sure about compatibility," he said. "So it's most likely that everyone will be using new codes."

On the matter of peripherals, since Nintendo showed the "Zapper" attachment at E3, Eguchi was a little more straightforward with his answer, although he still did not mention what Nintendo plans to package with the Nintendo Wii when it launches later this year.

"if software calls for a light gun, we'll make a light gun. If the software requires a guitar, then maybe we'll make a guitar. Our number one priority is always to provide the ultimate gameplay experience, so if the game requires a peripheral, then we'll supply a peripheral."

Stay with DSRevolution for more information regarding Nintendo's plans for the Wii as time to its launch dwindles!

GS: Regarding the Wii version of Animal Crossing, it seems like it might be nice to let players create their own furniture.

KE: I think it's a great idea. Of course, if you made your own furniture, you'd want to share it with others, to be able to give and receive hand-made stuff. Otherwise why would you make it? To be able to do that, you have to build in some place to keep that in the memory. The save data would be pretty huge, then. That's a challenge I'd like to face, though.

GS: How about storing furniture on Nintendo's servers, since there will be downloadable content to begin with?

KE: Yeah, that approach could work.

GS: Can you say if it will interact with the DS at all?

KE: Hmm. I'm not sure if that's even something I'd want to do. I don't know if we even could, or if we would want to. Frankly, I just don't know if we're going to.

GS: What's the possibility of releasing furniture packs or some such for the DS version?

KE: I don't think there's any room for that on a DS cart, but I think that something like that wouldn't be out of the question on the [Wii]. Using that virtual console concept, and maybe using the servers as you mentioned, we'd be able to provide added content for people. I can't discount the possibility of that.

GS: I asked Keita Takahashi about the Wii, and he said he wasn't interested in it, and that there was just too much emphasis on the controller. Are you worried that Nintendo may be scaring off some developers?

KE: Well, of course we don't want people to think that. Right now most of the information Nintendo has released about the [Wii] concerns the controller, so it may seem that way. As we get closer to launch, more information will be revealed that should help to fill out the picture a bit. There are other elements—some things I don't even know about, I'm sure! I think when it comes out, developers will say: “oh, you can do that!” They're really trying to create new ways of playing, and I hope my fellow developers will grow to feel we're doing that.

In an IGN interview, Katsuya Eguchi discussed how his team is exploring potential ways to take advantage of the WiiConnect24 feature, such as allowing friends to visit your town or leave messages while the machine is in standby mode.

On September 26, 2006, Satoru Iwata commented on the Wii’s message board system, saying:

“For example, if you’re playing Animal Crossing, a message like ‘Concert next Saturday in town’ will automatically be posted on the Message Board. The user doesn’t even have to be playing the game.”

In an interview, Katsuya Eguchi, the creator of Animal Crossing, discussed user designed furniture in the game:

“I think it’s a great idea. Of course, if you made your own furniture, you’d want to share it with others, to be able to give and receive hand-made stuff. Otherwise why would you make it? To be able to do that, you have to build in some place to keep that in the memory. The save data would be pretty huge, then. That’s a challenge I’d like to face, though.”

Also, in the December issue of Nintendo Power, a letter from Tom Nook is shown. A picture of the main character was also shown fishing in Issue 210 of Nintendo Power. The picture shows odd trees that were not used in other Animal Crossing games. The screen shot had a message on it: “Catch it!” This is most likely part of an Animal Crossing-themed microgame from the soon to be released Wii game, WarioWare: Smooth Moves.

According to IGN, the game had been confirmed for a Japanese release.

During a recent one-on-one interview with Shigeru Miyamoto, the famed Nintendo producer talked briefly about progress on the Wii version of Animal Crossing, Here's what he had to say:

"The Animal Crossing team has been very busy working on a variety of different projects. Actually, the Mii Channel was put together by the director of the most recent Animal Crossing game. His name is Mr. Nogami. Recently he said he really wants to get back to work on Animal Crossing again, so hopefully we'll be able to show something to people before too long."

The title was announced previously and is expected to make full use of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

From the looks of this, we'll be getting some new information soon.

re: Information Thread! Read All about it!

This may all be guesses, but some of it was taken from a very recent interview:

quote
As far back as E3 2005, there was confirmation of a sequel to Animal Crossing in the works on Wii. Already, DS to Wii connectivity was being touted, but it wasn't until mid-way through 2006 that IGN received a status update. In an interview with Katsuya Eguchi (producer on Animal Crossing: Wild World on DS), IGN did a little digging around about the future of Animal Crossing on Wii:

IGN Wii: How is work on Animal Crossing for Wii progressing and what can we expect from the final product?

Katsuya Eguchi: Right now we're currently considering our options in terms of what we can do with the various features of the controller and through WiiConnect24. With regard to the controller, basically it could become potentially your axe, your shovel and your fishing rod. You can imagine what can happen there. Again, we don't know if this will happen for sure because it's kind of a trial and error process. With regard to WiiConnect24, you could have someone visit your town even when you weren't actively playing and maybe leave you a letter or a gift. Also, through Wi-Fi Connection, players could play simultaneously.

Very interesting, and worth the read.

Club Nintendo Dates Animal Crossing Wii?

That's something at the very least. Nintendo has said they'd like for this game to come out in 2008, and with sparse information we clasp, I find it likely AC Wii will emerge in December if at all this year. With that mind, I'd call this more of 'educated guess' than a desperate hope for some Animal Crossing.

The article goes on to say that Animal Crossing Wii has been finished for a while, and though it isn't an MMO as suggested by rumours earlier this year, it features heavy use of Wi-Fi sharing (and presumably multiplayer, as in Wild World).
