New Player, A few questions

I'll get straight to the point.

Is there a way to safely store your items?

Is there bags in the game so you can store items?

What does this mean: Strength: 18/05, 18/96, 18/00 and so on.

This last question is the most complicated. I did something to my Baldur's gate II sound and it sounds like voices echo. This isn't a bad thing, I like it, but after I've done this many voices are cut off and I only hear the end of what they're saying. I thought I heard Minsc say *bleep* eggs for a second, anyone know how I can change it back?

I have the expansion to the game as well. Thanks if you can answer any questions I have and if there's anything you think I should know feel free to tell me (unless it's a spoiler).

I like the game so far, it's very in-depth and there is much customization and the story is great!

re: New Player, A few questions

I believe there is an item called the bag of holding or something, i havn't played this game in years so this is just guesswork, but its a bag that you can fill with tons of items you've collected.

i'm not sure if you can leave items laying around, or in chests and return to them later without them disappearing.

when you say you did something to the sound, what did you do? or did it just happen, lol

cheers

re: New Player, A few questions

There is, in fact, an item called the Bag of Holding. It is a magical sack that can hold lots of items, while taking up only a single slot in your inventory. The other nice thing about it is that no matter how much stuff you put in it, it always weighs a fixed amount, so carrying all of that extra stuff does not cause you to become encumbered. Given the obvious benefits of such an item, it is easy to understand that it is something of a rare and wonderful item. Do not expect to find too many of these, or to get them without a fight. I think there may only be two in the whole game, one in Shadows of Amn, and one in the Throne of Bhaal expansion, but I could be mistaken about that.

There are also some handy items that are far easier to obtain, and allow you to carry more stuff. There is such a thing as a scroll case that can hold a bunch of scrolls but take up only one slot in your inventory. You can buy them from the same merchants who sell scrolls. You can also get a gem bag, that can be used to carry a bunch of separate gems, rings, and necklaces, while only taking up one slot in your inventory. In a quick run through the merchants around the Promenade area of Athkatla, I was able to find two scroll cases and a gem bag, and they each cost me somewhere in the 270-290 GP range.

The extra digits after an 18 strength apply only to fighter-type characters, and they represent a 100-point scale that further describes that character's 18 strength in relation to the strengths of all other fighter-type characters with an 18 strength. Thus it is a percentile ranking for fighters with 18 strengths. Strength is the primary attribute of all fighters, including the specialist fighter classes like berserker, ranger, paladin, etc. Fighter-type characters with an 18 strength gain additional "to hit" and damage bonuses from that strength, as compared to other classes. But not all 18 strengths are equal, and the size of those extra bonuses for fighters varies depending on the percentile ranking of their 18 strength. Of the examples you gave, 18/05 would be an 18 strength that is 5 out of 100 on the 100-point scale (a relatively low 18 strength), 18/96 is 96 out of 100 (a very high 18 strength), and 18/00 means 100 out of 100, the highest possible 18 strength, and the highest possible natural strength for a human character (think Conan).

It is important to note that even the lowest 18 strength a fighter can have, an 18/01, is not a bad thing at all. A fighter with an 18/01 strength gets +1 to hit and +3 to damage, which is better than the +1 to hit and +2 to damage than any other character class would get with an 18 strength. But any percentile over 50 will give even better bonuses. The breakdown is as follows:

18 strength for non-fighters: +1 to hit, +2 to damage
18/01-18/50: +1 to hit, +3 to damage
18/51-18/75: +2 to hit, +3 to damage
18/76-18/90: +2 to hit, +4 to damage
18/91-18/99: +2 to hit, +5 to damage
18/00: +3 to hit, +6 to damage
