Launch title no more

http://wii.ign.com/articles/735/735895p1.html

September 27, 2006 - If there's one thing we can't wait to do on Wii, it's break a few virtual bones. After all, it's football season, and what better way to celebrate the world's most gruesome sport than with a little Blitz: The League? As it stood up until now, Blitz was slated for the Wii launch window, though information has been completely scarce on the Wii-make. Per usual, a quiet game is a bad sign, and the lack of info had fans seriously doubting whether the game would be making its originally projected release date.

Today, Midway went on the record with IGN stating that Blitz: The League will not be making the Wii launch, but is still slated for release on the system.

In our previous interview with Midway game designer Kraig Kujawa, he had only a few tidbits to offer us about the title's conversion, mentioning that the game's design would be a hybrid between both old and new control, stating also that the company was still getting comfortable with the free-hand input device.

No reason has been given for the later release date for Blitz, but we have a few speculations that could prove to be true when future details arise. First off, Midway would be bringing an already-released GCN upgrade to Wii rather than kicking the system off with a fresh Blitz title that's fully compatible and built from the ground up for the system. On the opposite side of the spectrum is the competition factor, as Wii is currently launching with EA's own Madden franchise as a flagship title. Could Midway be waiting until the dust settles with Madden NFL 07 to bring out its answer to football's largest franchise? It's really anyone's guess at this point.

Representatives from Midway Entertainment had the following to say about Blitz: The League and a future Wii appearance:

"Midway can confirm that Blitz: The League will not be available as a Nintendo Wii launch title, but still plans to bring its top-selling franchise to the system in the future," a spokesperson for the company revealed.

And with that, we're down to one football franchise at Wii launch. Arcade fans fear not, however, as something tells us we'll be breaking bones with full free-hand control before you can say "league-certified performance enhancers." We'll have more information on Blitz: The League as news breaks.
