Problems running under Win2k

If you are having problems starting Hitman 2, please try the following:

Check to see if your sound card is a PCI card (Especially Creative PCI 128)
If it is please refer to the Readme.txt file on the Hitman 2 disk and in the installed Hitman 2 folder. You will need to follow the steps to edit your hitman2.ini file.

Alternatively, if you feel uncomfortable editing the .ini file, please go to the start button, and then "run" and then type in "dxdiag" under the "sound" option please lower your hardware acceleration level by sliding the bar to the Left. This should also work.

If neither of these solutions work, check your graphics card corresponds with the list on the back of the Hitman2 box, as any other alternatives are NOT supported by the game. If you have one of the cards mentioned but are experiencing either fatal error messages, greyed out figures or any other sort of graphical corruption, please ensure that your graphics card drivers are 100% up to date and that your computer has all the critical updates from http://www.microsoft.com and at least internet Explorer 5.5 installed.

Several different things can cause this problem. Here's a list of the most common culprits associated with these crashes:

Make sure the CD-ROM is clean (check for both scratches and smudges on the reading surface of the CD).

Make sure the game has been installed properly.

Make sure DirectX 8.1 has been installed properly.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card and that they are DirectX 8.1-compatible.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card and that they are DirectX 8.1-compatible.

Make sure Virtual Memory is enabled on your system.

Run Scandisk.

Run Disk Defragmenter.

Clean out old temp (.TMP) files from the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP or C:\WINx\TEMP directory on your hard drive (from Windows Explorer).

Make sure you do not have any Anti-Virus utilities (like Norton's AntiVirus) running resident prior to playing Hitman 2.

Make sure you do not have any third-party Windows memory management utilities (like QuarterDeck's QEMM) running resident prior to playing Hitman 2.

Make sure you do not have any 3rd party Windows disk caching utilities running resident prior to playing Hitman 2.

Make sure you do not have Norton's Crash Protector running resident prior to playing Hitman 2.

Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the game.

Try exiting the game, rebooting your machine, and re-entering the game.

Note that if your system crashes to the desktop while playing Hitman 2, you should probably reboot your computer before starting a new play session. Otherwise, DirectDraw or DirectSound may be in a locked state, and the game will be unable to use your sound or video hardware.
