While I heart Killzone 1, Killzone Liberaton, and Killzone 2, they aren't without their problems.
KZ1- Frame rate issues, and thems horrible seams. Frame rate wasn't too horrible, but you could tell it wasn't managed as well as an experienced developer (like the folks behind BLACK) would handle a game with similar graphics. Seams were obvious at times, with inviso-cracks lining walls, the floor, and other random object. Gun flare wasn't too impressive, often flashing to a split second too long, with dim lighting effects. Added to the choppy feel. There were also a few sound effects (voice tracks) that were recorded or converted into horrid quality, (such as Templar's "Keep Quiet!" line). Also, while the story, and covert ops aspect of the campaign was great, we never truly understood what the *bleep* happened between Earth, and the events leading to the exodus of future Helghans into space. On top of that, their planet mutated them, but not much info is given into why. All we know is it turned all the Helghast into badass mother *bleep*ers with a taste for blood, resistance to pain, and a *bleep*ed up accent only a mother could ... scratch that, there don't appear to be any Helghan women.
People also complained about the AI, but I drilled holes into those opinions time and again. They were pretty smart, and no matter how much one person said that battles were always the same, scripting was always the same, etc, this simply wasn't true. For its time, the AI was up to date, and to add to that, the Helghast would never be caught running away, arms flailing, whining like little bitches, unlike a certain pigmy alien species that made up the brunt of the invading enemy force in a certain other first person shooter series.
Liberation - Controls were okay, but the auto targeting was slightly off, and could have used some finer tuning, and OH MY GOD, WHAT THE *bleep* - GAME WAS HARD! In a good way though, if you didn't mind having the shit beat out of you on a minute to minute basis by an increasingly bloodthirsty enemy force (AI improved). The campaign wasn't too bad, was much more of a small scale side story though. In that sense, plot was under developed, which can or can't be excused by some due to the portable nature of the game. Me? I expect any game to have gloves removed, hands dipped in glass shards, arms swinging. By Killzone 2, I couldn't even remember wtf happened in Liberation.
Killzone 2- Things were glossed over here, sadly. The Helghast mutation seems to have no presence here, pasty white skin color and 'voice a
Characters are still pretty 2-Dimensional, though smartly, they didn't sabotage the potential here (at least w/characters that survive ). The game ends on a cliffhanger that seriously came out of the blue. They pulled something out of their hats that has no reference in prior games - an enemy threat that came from god knows where, hinting to even greater battles in the future. KZ2 abruptly shuts the doors on many chapters of the first games we'd have liked to seen expanded on first, while at the same time, freshly introduces a whole new scenario for them to master in coming additions to the series. While some may not agree witht he move, I think if they were going to change it, then now was the best time - sooner the better.
That all said, there are way more positives to each game than there are negatives. Each game in the series has improved or introduced polished elements that stick, and continue to work well with the series, and if KZ2 is any hint of progression, KZ3 is going to be the beast you can't ignore now matter how loyal you think you are.
