Composer Becomes Industry Name, Takes Money and Flees
|
Final Fantasy XIII's composer, Masashi Hamauzu, has announced his departure from Square Enix. A string of sound team departures has struck the company and will continue.
Hamauzu's first solo venture on a Final Fantasy game has received praise since the game's release. Trained in classical music, Hamauzu specifically chose Square after deciding to compose for video games due to his admiration for famed Square composer Nobuo Uematsu.

ffs, I love Hamauzu. I'm going to go chill to Vielen Dank now. D:

This immediately reminded me of the song by the Steve Miller Band.. dunno why. I find that a little strange.

You make it sound soo bad... "Takes money and Flees".... honestly... you make it sound as if he took the money off Square and then never actually did anything for them. I'm sure he had worked for Square for a number of years doing the compositions, and it's not unheard of for people to move to another company where they're paid more money and/or has more opportunity... even creating his own side business. If anything it's good, since it means we may see his music in games other than FF which are released pretty much once every 4-5 years... (Excluding vsXIII)

Wasn't expecting anyone to not realise it was a joke, to be honest.

Wait, the guy who composed FFX's music was the same guy who composed Dirge of Cerberus' music. CONSIDER MY MIND BLOWN! Still, sad to see him go. Even if I do prefer Uematsu's work. It'll be interesting to see who composes for the upcoming FF games.

What happened to Uematsu, again? Is he retired or something?

That's a shame. He never reached Uematsu's standards but he was still brilliant. I was actually listening to the music from XIII the other day and I thought damn, this sounds quite good.
Edit: Uematsu left and formed his own production, SMILE or something like that. He still contributed to FFXII after that, I believe..so he's still technically a part of the team. But he's composing for a wider area now, for example the theme for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

This doesn't mean, however, he can't be working on future Square projects. Uematsu, who left Square Enix to become a freelancer, is now composing Final Fantasy XIV's OST. The last couple of weeks, I have been listening to FFXIII's OST on the official site. It has completely blown me away, and probably convinced me to buy the OST. I don't know yet.

I so should have purchased the album whilst I was in Japan, but I didn't want to ruin the experience for myself. D:

Don't worry, it's not out until Wednesday. You couldn't have ruined it for yourself if you wanted to.
One of the bosses has some really epic music.

Although I'd rather see Wada leave than this dude but alas the world isn't perfect.
