Tough question for me because I like and dislike an equal amount of things about it. I think R* made some dumb decisions such as re-creating the whole of LC, and not having Claude in the game and I also think they could have payed more attention to detail with certain things such as when the in-car view moves to the side of the car every time you go round a corner. But nevertheless I still enjoyed playing through it and I do feel inclined to play-through a second time. ------------------- ![]()

I'm one of the people that really likes the game. It's probably one of my favourite games ever. I can see why some people might think it was a disappointment but I prefer the realism to the craziness. ------------------- ![]()

I loved it at first but got bored of it fairly easily. If you're a San Andreas type of guy then maybe you'll miss the longevity but different people find their own fun in IV. ------------------- gone with poca rola

Braden I did the exact same thing as you when I first got GTA4. I played it constantly. On April 29th I had a 15 hours non-stop session. I kept telling myself 'It'll get better once I get to the next island'. It never did. I started to realise that I was'nt really having fun. I was playing purely for the sake of wanted to get 100%. -------------------

re: GTA IV over-rated? |
quote MasterI think you're oversimplifying. The problem with GTA IV, in the opinion of the sizable part of the community that is unsatisfied with it is NOT that it was a victim of over-expectations. Nor is the main problem that it was over-hyped, as many people on the other side of the debate believe. I am actually quite surprised that the people, like yourself, who love the game, still can't seem to comprehend what the people who are less than enamored with this game are really saying. Sure, people are complaining about a lack of the incredible depth of San Andreas, and from that standpoint, many people feel IV is a step backward. However, that is merely a symptom of the greater issue of why people are disappointed with the game. Ask yourself what does the leaving out of all the huge number of flyables, things to do, rewards for doing the activities, the rags to better rags motif, the wanted system, the physics of gunplay, Niko's slow movement and the car physics all have in common? It is a stride toward realism. In order to make a game more real, like it or not, the wild and wackiness has to be VERY TONED DOWN. That is a fact. The story has to have tragedy. You can't do handbrake turns at 200 MPH, you can't fly military jets and so on and so forth. I think the point you guys are missing is NOT that you, Braden, Sniper and other people who love the game are wrong to enjoy it as you do, but that you are mistakenly trying to pigeon hole everyone who is underwhelmed by the game into either whining crybabies, or people who had WAY too high expectations of the game, and have now stomped off in a tantrum and are sitting in the corner with our eyes closed and our arms crossed, clenching our teeth saying, "I won't enjoy it! I WON'T I WON'T and you can't make me!! Think about it. Let's say anticipation was too high, as you are suggesting. Let's say that people just couldn't accept not having jet packs, a gym and all the new stuff because they were "spoiled" by San Andreas. Well, first off, wouldn't it be the right thing to do or Rockstar to have "spoiled us" even more with IV? That isn't my main point though, it is something I just thought of now lol. The main argument I have is that if the problem with GTA IV was that were all expecting San Andreas with next gen graphics, I would say that WE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN USED TO IV. Think about it. If what you are suggesting is true, then the people complaining about GTA IV would have done all their complaining in the beginning and then finally settled into ENJOYING THE GAME despite all that is perceived to be missing. But that didn't happen, did it? Why? Simple. Because the "San Andreas like features" and all the so called over-hype is JUST AN EXCUSE that acts as smoke and mirrors covering the real problem people have with GTA IV. That problem is that to MANY fans, all the fun was sucked out of the game and replaced with realism. NOT that they don't have jet packs, but that the gameplay mechanics have been so thoroughly changed, slowed down, made more REALISTIC, the driving changed, the REWARDS completely taken out of the game, and the formerly "light and insane" style of GTA replaced with a more serious, dare say, somber story . Now I get that you guys enjoy the things that were changed. That isn't a problem. The only one I see is that you are mistaken in your belief that the part of the community that doesn't like the game, or has stopped playing it, isn't bored of the game because of what has been left out of it, as much as bored of the game for WHAT IS IN THE GAME NOW. in other words, had the game lacked all the SA features we love, let's say, but was FAR LESS realistic, had police bribes, MUCH BETTER handling cars, a less morbidly depressing storyline, a faster running Niko, the ability to spend HOURS on a free roaming rampage without dying, TONS AND TONS of rewards like GTA III had for packages, R3 missions, and on and on, then you might be able to say the game was over-hyped. Because the fans would have been VERY HAPPY with, even GTA III with next gen graphics, FORGET about San Andreas. The problem with GTA IV is a great number of fans believe that GTA III is far better game, and would have embraced the game if Rockstar hadn't ADDED so much realism. Ask yourself this, Game Masta: If what you are saying is true, don't you think people would have adapted to the game by now and would still be having fun with it? Overhype or over-expectations DOES NOT explain why so many people have shelved the game a mere 3 months after it released. ------------------- ![]() It's official. I've read over this thread a few times and I'm hoping that Chiro is being sarcastic and cracking a joke. There is nothing that has been said in here that warranted such a reaction. Has Braden been flooding the forum with pro-GTA IV propaganda and "pigeon-holing" the forum members who don't like it as babies? I must be missing something. I've looked at the last 7-8 forum pages and really haven't seen him go after people just because they don't like the game as much as he does. ------------------- ![]() ![]()

I think the "realism" excuse is the real smoke-n-mirrors to cover up the San Andreas complaint. I think I've had more 'insane' and 'unrealistic' adventures in IV than any of the other games. Why you guys can't do the same is beyond me. -------------------

ChiroVette, as you know I'm a huge fan of SA. SA's storyline sucked. I could never get the hang of it. Whereas, IV's storyline is easily understandable and realistic. The car handling in IV is way better and in a few minutes I had already mastered the cars' physics. No jetpacks simply add a little more challenge to the game as you have to find a way of how to climb there yourself. The thing is that most of you are missing the point of the game. A huge portion of the game is multiplayer so one can't judge only on the storyline. I have played for four hours straight with GTA KH2 freak - teaming up against cops, doing crazy stunts etc. -------------------

Overrated? Yes. IMO, rather than a 10, a 9.6 would be a better score, due to the lack of side missions, and, in general, things to do after finishing 100%. -------------------

re: GTA IV over-rated? |
quote The OmegaI don't get what you're saying, Omega. Do you feel I attacked Braden or accused him of flooding? If so, that was NOT my intent. I was merely trying to explain to Game Masta that his perceptions about the complaints people have about GTA IV are a little off and that the issues people have with IV are far more real than just being the result of expectations being too high. Game Masta, I was far from jumping on your ass. I was explaining something that I believe in depth, not attacking you. Folks, please don't use the fact that I like to write in great detail to mean I am attacking you, angry, think you posted out of line, or don't respect your opinion. However, as someone who is less than thrilled with GTA, I can assure you that the reasons for feeling this way are far more sincere than just missing a shitload of SA features. IN fact, as I said it has more to do with the lack of GTA III gameplay elements and rewards, and far less to do with jet packs and working out. I would have been perfectly happy with GTA III + Next gen graphics and in depth story. quote MasterBecause we feel the physics are way too heavy, not at all what we like in GTA, and don't enjoy doing these things in the game. In my opinion GTA IV is GREAT when you are doing a mission, but for me that's about it. Look, you could use the same reasoning with The Getaway, True Crime or Parallel Lines, Sure you could do crazy things in those games too. You cold explore, and all kinds of things. But when the basic physics of a game are not to your likingm the fun isn't there for you. Nobody is saying you shouldn't enjoy it. Only that some of us don't. Why do you see this as a personal attack against you? Have I once asked you to stop posting your opinions? Have I ever attacked you personally, called you names or accused you of trolling? Of course not. I am just representing the side of the fabase that is less than thrilled with the game, not attacking you and people who feel as you do. The Omega and Game Masta, I am all for self introspection and criticism. PLEASE show me what I said that you felt was some sort of a personal attack or insult to a member here. If it was an unintentional attack, I will apologogize. If it was not an attack I will explain what I was saying that you misiniterpreted.
