The nature of Metroid games makes it a hard game to incorporate a good multiplayer. The mechanics of the games, atleast the last two primes, have been much more disposed to an adventure time game, in which you rely more on your brains in a fight than good reflexes or aim. That is why the multiplayer seemed so dull in Echos, was because the controls were designed to fit into a game where you lock onto a monster's weakspot and pummel it while you try and avoid its attacks, rather than a game in which cunning an accuracy take presence, like a traditional FPS.

In my opinion, it is a much better idea for Metroid games to continue to focus on this one player adventure aspect, and stay away from multiplayers. Instead, a much better idea would be to create a new game franchise, a spin off of the Metoid series, which focuses exclusively on the FPS aspects of the game and has an incredible multiplayer.

My idea would be a game focusing almost entirely on the conflicts between the Federation and the Space Pirates, and using Samus sparingly, just as an occasional rumor or something. I would love to see a game in which you are a GF trooper, and you go through different missions, gaining different armor and weapons, fighting pirates, or you could choose to be a pirate, and go on missions to spread your control throughout the galaxy, with much the same mechanics.

An online mode could consist of many different Troopers and pirates, each with different armors and armorments, all fighting in Metroid inspired worlds.
