MGS4's Boss Battles...dissapointing? |
|
Did anyone else think that the beauty and the Beast corps battles simply weren't that great? I really couldn't help but feel disappointed with them. Laughing Octupus was a pretty interesting fight, and somewhat original. Raging Raven and Crying Wolf were pretty lame, and I find it VERY irritating when soldiers are added so they can shoot you while you try to fight the actual *bleep*ing boss. Screaming Mantis is the best of the bunch, I think, and shaking the controller to finish her off was cool.
I DID find the Metal Gear Rex vs Ray boss battle to be kickass though, and so was the final boss battle. While the fighting system wasn't very thought out it seemed, it was no doubt the most epic boss fight in the series. Overall though, I felt like MGS4's boss battles could've been better. If I were to rank the games based on best boss battles, I'd say: MGS1 > MGS3 > MGS4 > MGS2 What do you guys think? Agree? Disagree? Why?

I couldn't agree more. Out of the entire series' history, I'd have to say that the BB Unit was my least favorite thing. Like you said, I too hate it when a boss battle uses soldiers to fight you while you're fighting the boss at the same time. It's almost like the boss is so pathetic that they need to bring in other soldiers to make up for it.

I found Kojima tried a bit too hard with these bosses. Like he purposely included a huge sad backstory to silence critics who said The Cobra Unit lacked background and personality. But then again The Cobra Unit seemed like a response to Dead Cell. Damn, Hideo just can't please them all.

Kojima's biggest problem was trying to continue from Foxhound. How can you make a better unit than that? You can't. After seeing as amazing a unit as the Foxhound members we fought in MGS1, it's impossible to follow up and make another unit that's anywhere near as good as they were.
Plus, the problem with these bosses for me was that they were too "out of this world". In the past games, we were always fighting another human, unless it was a REX or RAY fight. It's almost like the Most Dangerous Game, especially in The End's case. We were always fighting a worthy adversary, that was just another soldier on the battlefield... with some special powers, of course. So these bosses were just odd... it was like I was playing a different video game when it came to the boss battles. -------------------

I felt that they were decent enough, not mind blowing but definitely satisfactory. Probably wouldnt rank with Foxhound but better than the Cobra's or Dead Cell

I found them too easy, some of them had difficult parts to them, that rolling attack comes to mind, put apart from that the only thing challenging about them were the length of battle in couple of cases. I thought some of the cobra unit was harder than BB corps, which is very strange considering i played MGS3 on very easy and MGS4 on solid normal.

^ Same here, I thought that they were too easy to beat (playing on Solid normal). They seem to go down after a few shots which was rather disappointing. I was also hoping for a really good Sniping battle, another one like the end fight, but the Crying Wolf battle just didn't feel right and was again to easy.

quote Big BossI think the Boss's in general in the MGS series were a bit out of this world. In The End's case for example.. he was already "technically" dead and passed a 100 but had enough accuracy and sight to snipe like he did. Then we had The Sorrow, etc. The only part I got caught off guard was when Tentacles spinned into me and I got killed. I didn't see that coming. Wolf took me the longest because I, for some reason, forgot that I could use NV and then it was easier. Raven was a bit easy and wished she was harder to fight. The only thing annoying about Vamp and Mantis were their knives.. but once you learned to dodge them, you were good. I'd say one of my favorite fights was with the Rex.. against Ray. (I wish Hideo makes another ZoE) In the scheme of things.. I agree with the threadstarters ranking of boss fights in the MGS series.

The Beauty and the Beast team fights definetely weren't as the boss fights had been in previous games. Still fun, but not on par with previous bosses. Screaming Mantis was the only really memorable boss.
Rex vs Ray, the fight with Vamp, and the final battle were pretty cool though.

If I were to rank the Bosses in order I'd go :
MGS1 > MGS4 > MGS3 > MGS2. The Boss battles themselves in MGS4 were good, in my opinion, but I think they would have served a little better without their subtle references to the MGS1 bosses. ( I rank them above the MGS3 bosses for the sole reason that at least we got a little bit of an explanation has to how they became beasts. ) We've had this convo. in other threads before, but I also liked the supernatural edge to the Beauties as well =] ------------------- ![]()

I was a little disappointed to only fight with girls... No offense, but I like a muscle fight with another guy, 'cause you're not supposed to hit girls.
But I think they at least were a little better than Cobra Unit, as they didn't just blow up when they died. My opinion: Psycho Mantis > MGS1 > MGS2 > MGS4 > MGS3 ------------------- "I agree that our popularity has hit a peak.

Well, there were, technically, 8 Boss battles: the FROGS (with Rat Patrols help), Vamp, RAY and Ocelot and the B&Bs.
I liked Ray vs. REX most, for the obvious reason: it's 2 Metal Gears fighting each other! Ocelot was good because the fight went through all 4 games. Vamp wasn't as good as in MGS2, but still good. The FROGS is a good ol' killing spree type fight... But the B&Bs? There's a cutscene in Act 1 that shows them all causing havoc, killing people... and after that? nothing. With the exception of LO killing a few people at the start of Act 2, and RR bombing a few buildings in Act 3 you don't see the B&Bs 'til the actual Boss fight. There should have been a few more cutscenes of them doing what they do in order to "get them over" as Bosses. Also their stories, They seem tacked on. If Drebin had explained their stories before or during the fight that would have made sense... but afterwards? all Snake can say is "Am I supposed to feel sorry for her?" B&B are almost defo the worst "boss team" in the MGS series when it comes to their backstories. I say "almost" because I never played PO... and the COBRAS didn't really have backstories. Last but not least: the Bosses are easy. I was on LiquidEasy difficulty, but that's no excuse for Bosses not to kill me! The only Boss I died on was Screaming Mantis, I think... All in all, yeah, the bosses are disappointing. -------------------

quote IzludeBut like I said, even though they had special abilities, they were all still humans. I know the BB Unit were human too, but we weren't fighting those women. We were fighting the insane killing machines that were attached to them. That's one of the reasons I didn't like them. By themselves, meaning without their machines, the BB women are useless. It's not like we're facing an insane sniper like The End or Sniper Wolf, or a master of CQC like The Boss... We're just fighting "fake", enhanced women. -------------------

I'd say mgs1 where the best too. I'll never forget first playing the game.
My order would be..... MGS1 > MGS2 > MGS3 > MGS4 MGS2 is only 2nd mind just because of the amount of times i played it. MGS1 and 2 are just burned into my brain. MGS2 just had that 'play me again' factor. what about best boss order??? Top 5??? mine would be.... Psycho Mantis Vulcan Raven (Tank battle) Sniper Wolf The End Olga Gurlukovich (U get to use snake) I would put Rex battle in there but i didn't wanna put the metal gear battles in.
