I'd like to think Altair was real. There is no proof that he isn't real, i know there was a'n assasin back in those days, he was quite famous. But it wasn't like jumping roof to roof and his name wasn't Altair.

Actually, Altair was very real, and so was the creed. But alot of informatin on it was burned and destroyed in the crusades. And good for your teacher! She is interested and correct!

Altair was a real assassin because Ezio Auditoré Da Firenze is real.

it says based on various RELIGIONS & BELIEFS.. but also in assassins creed 2 after you beat the game you can obtain his armor by visiting all the assassin's tombs.. still he sounds pretty awesome to me

The concept of assassins creed is very fictional but historians have discovered that there was an assassin's brotherhood based in a place called Masyaf, which is a castle in modern day Syria. Most of the records there were burnt after the third crusade. And all the assassin characters are fictional but there was a man called Rashid ad-Din Sinan portrayed as Al Mualim people named him the mas of the Masyaf mountain. And he believed that there would be a profit to stop the crusade this person is portrayed as Altair. And he had a list of 9 people to assassinate in order to stop the war and he (apparently did help the end of it) did it. and nobody and prove what happened because all the documents and Masyaf, Syria were burnt and disposed of, probably to hide the evidence of assassins.

I do not know about Altair Ibn-La'Ahad but the assassin's were real please don't be mean I have done alot of research and have found that assassin's creed is based off of the hashshin which were real the castelo in assassin's creed 1 is real as well. Now the new game assassin's creed 3 is entirely FAKE! The hashshin were disbanded or killed after about 1178 A.D. hope this helped

Yes he always has if everyone actually put there minds together they would know so just a fellow assassin decendant to another Altair was a real assassin.

To a point! There was a brotherhood of assassins based all round Europe (notably eastern). But as far as Altair being all mighty and such...no! The games (AC,2,BH and R) are all very loosely based on historical books. Its best to take some characters views with a pinch of salt.

Think of it the way you would watching the show Spartacus...

History, Assassins.
"Hashshashin" A Muslim (Ismāʿīlī) Assassin's Order existed and was active during the crusades and responsible for some major assassinations at the time though it's likely they where attributed more killings than they where actually responsible for. Their main motive was to reduce aggression against the Ismāʿīlī through assassinations of political enemies and revenges for aggression against them. This means they targeted people on both sides of the of the major Christian/Muslim conflict.
The order perished with and in the aftermath of the Mongol Invasion. (Last strong hold fell 1265).

Assassins Game.
The Hashshashin can be said to be the mythological base for the game(s') Assassin's Brotherhood and most of it is purely fictional but some ideas and their working methods are reflected in the game(s). I.e. they never targeted civilians, they favored public assassinations, they where well trained in the arts of combat, strategies, disguises, languages, horses and so on.

Some names and places in the game(s) DO relate to people and places that actually existed but Altaïr in not one of them. They did have a strong hold in Masyaf for example but it looked nothing like in the game. Some targets in the first game did exist and was indeed killed by the Order though the exact circumstances are not always that correct.

History, Templars.
Or Knight Templars, christian military monastic order(s) during the crusades. Their main mission was military (the recapture and hold of the holy land) but most their member and much of their work was not. As the tide turned to the favor of the Muslims under Saladins the Order(s) fortunes dwindled and continued to do so until it was (for mainly political reasons) disbanded and had their last Grand Master burned at the stake in Paris March 18, 1314.
What was left of the order either fell in with the Knights Hopsitallers or fled to areas outside Papal control (mainly Portugal and Scotland).
No Templar Order from that time exists today. Some orders using their symbols and mannerisms started to surface in the 18th century but they have no historical connection to the medieval ones (note 400 year gap)

As a great source of confusion to this matter is the modern Knights Templar Order within the Freemasons but with them it's just as for the Freemasons as whole, it's matter of copy and plagiarism. Not historical connections.

Templar's Game.
The Templar's in the game is little more than a mix mash of historical Knights Templar and modern Freemasons with a completely fictional agenda to fit the game.
However several characters in the game(s) did exist, was members of the Knights Templar or the Freemasons and got killed/murdered at the time mentioned. Also some of the modern people featured in puzzles and such are know to be members of the Freemasons.

As a whole Ubisoft have done a really great job in this series to mix in accurate historical facts with their wholly fictional stories.
