Nintendo Power will soon cease to exist, as the publication prepares to publish its final issues before coming to an end.

One of the most iconic and long-running game magazines in the United States, Nintendo Power debuted in 1988 under Nintendo. Years later, it was passed to Future Publishing, whose wide-ranging portfolio includes other big names like Official Xbox Magazine, PC Gamer, PlayStation: The Official Magazine, and Best Buy's @Gamer.

Yet sources say it was not Future who ended Nintendo Power. Rather, Nintendo was uninterested in renewing their contract with the media group and seemed unwilling to participate in digital initiatives that Future felt was necessary for the publication's survival. Apparently, the Japanese company was always "difficult to work with."

Editors and staff were informed last week of the impending closure, sources say. Employees are being moved to other Future properties like MacLife magazine and GamesRadar, while the official Xbox and PlayStation publications and @Gamer remain unaffected.

Right now, it's unclear how many more issues of Nintendo Power we'll be seeing. Senior editor Chris Hoffman posted on Twitter earlier that he was "sad to see it go" and hopes the editorial team will "try to make the last issues memorable." His tweets were quickly removed, however.
