re: The Official Wii U Thread of This is Actually Happening
Backwards compatibility was always going to be a problem with the Wii. If they want Wii games to work on their new system, they need a similar controller for their new console.
I think the DS did a much better job aiming at everyone than the Wii, because the DS had much, much more 3rd party support. While the DS has 3 original Castlevania games, the Wii only has a crappy fighting spin-off (and a WiiWare game that doesn't even save). How many RPGs does the DS have compared to the Wii? And while the Wii boasts casual games such as Wii Fit, Wii Sports, and Wii Music, none of them are as easy to use (or as cheap) as Nintendogs or Brain Training.
Although you could argue that the Wii's gimmick is much more appealing to non-gamers than the DS's gimmick.
Hence why I said "varying". They attracted the core handheld gamer, but would have done so no matter what, the kids and the casuals. The market they didn't penetrate is the "hardcore" set, the ones buying only Gears and Halos, which I feel the PSP managed to get a chunk of. Personally, I doubt this market is every really going to adopt a handheld, but companies like Sony are certainly trying to still sell to them.
Ah, right, forgot about those guys. I guess they're not worth mentioning when we talk about people who buy handhelds. I agree, gamers who only like games like Halo, Gears of War, CoD, etc want HD graphics and perfect online; things a handheld system is never going to accomplish.
But now why would they put this out when they just launched the 3DS? Unless you can use the 3DS also?
If a new console is announced at E3 this year, then it probably won't be released until next year or even the year after. The Wii (or, uh, "Revolution") was originally revealed at E3 2005, (and then the controller at the Tokyo Game Show in September), over a year before it actually launched in November 2006.

I think Chinatown Wars was largely hurt by piracy. Just going off common sense, it's easy to think that the target demographic of Chinatowns is a lot more likely to pirate a game instead of pay for it as opposed to the target demographic for say, Mario Kart or Pokémon.
Anyway, if Rockstar is making something for the "Wiipire Strikes Back" launch, I doubt it'll be a GTA game, as the fanbase for that series is pretty much locked onto Sony and Microsoft consoles.
That's why this will be such an interesting move. One would think that the first mover advantage would apply, but history hasn't been quite so clear cut. Genesis hit before SNES, yet lost. PS hit before Saturn and the N64 and won the generation, but N64 hitting last still managed a clear second place. Dreamcast hit first, but was wiped out when PS2 hit and dominated the rest of the gen. Then 360 gets its headstart, and is promptly routed by the Wii.
It's not just totally unpredictable though. There are many reason why those things happen. SNES beat Genesis because the NES fanbase carried over (oh, and the games were 10 times better). PS beat N64 because the discs could hold more data than cartridges and thus the console received better 3rd party support. Dreamcast, well, we could go on all day about the issues that console had. Wii beat 360 because of its novelty value.
When a console is released is practically irrelevant. Though one thing’s for sure, Microsoft/Sony’s next consoles, no matter how long they take to hit the market, will make Project Cafe look under-powered.
However, now that were looking at what may be a 2-3 year gap between a console and it's competitors, things could get interesting.
I don't really think there has been anything like this though where a console is being released 1-2 years minimum before the rest.
Going off Japanese release dates, Genesis was release 2 years before SNES. Dreamcast was released a year and half before PS2, and 2 and a half years before GameCube. 360 a year before Wii/PS3. Happens all the time.

For anyone interested, there's a very interesting and entertaining discussion on the Wii 2 rumours and whether releasing a new console so soon is a good business strategy over here.
I hate when the new Nintendo system does not have backwards Wii compatibility.
Where'd you read that? Whatever Nintendo's doing with the new console, I'm sure it'll have backwards compatibility with Wii games, and support all the Wii controllers and stuff.
I mean Nintendo has obviously found casual gamers make more money and Sony and Microsoft seem to be catching on to this too.
I don't think casual gamers are the first thing on their minds here. They've had their Wiis sitting there for a few years collecting dust. If Nintendo was focusing on the casual audience more, they Nintendo wouldn't bother with HD and Blu-Ray (if those rumours are true).

Nintendo has been releasing more "core" titles than "Casual" titles for the entire generation with Wii. Really, the only difference between Wii and other Nintendo consoles has been the Wii _____ games, which aren't that much different than the multitude of sports and puzzle games they released on NES, or the other random Mario spinoffs that have been a staple for a while.
Yeah, obviously. I was talking about their marketing, not what they were actually releasing.

Recharagable batteries are garbage, especially the Wii-specific ones. We once had a pack that pretty much died after a few weeks. I literally threw it into the trash.
Glad to see you guys on the wii forums are giving the Wii U a fair shake. Over on the xbox 360 forums it's nothing but "nintendo sucks dick" and some shit about how the ps4 and xbox 720
Same thing's happening on the PS3 forum. It's not really surprising though.
To me, 3D is far more impressive than HD ever was. It actually feels like an advance rather than a marginal improvement, and I can't wait for glasses free tech to become commonplace.
