I've seen very little this gen. that wouldn't have worked basically the same last gen. with proper handling, but that's just my very biased opinion.

However, more power is never a bad thing. I'm just tired of so many developer relying completely on better tech instead of better art design.

I think building a console around the flavor of the day genre is a recipe for long term failure.

Seriously though, this is what happened to Nintendo in the 32/64 bit era. N64 was made to play platformers, which needed the graphical boost to work well in 3D, but tastes turned from those heavy gameplay genres to cinimatic adventure experiences that needed storage space for CG.

I also think that the idea of state of the art graphics providing immersible gameplay is stupid. Proper game design and artistic direction is what immerses a player, hence why a game like Metroid Prime or Halo still look better than a generic shooter, say The Conduit, even with more powerful engines at work. It has nothing to do with being photorealistic or cartoony, as both styles can have great and terrible aesthetic design.
