A lot of my complaints
are valid, you just don't mind them. You don't mind having female characters all looking "unreal," I do. When was the last time you saw someone in real life look like Tifa or anyone?
Anti-VII? Yes, most of those complaints can be against VII, but they're not restricted.
quote therealNgamer
Really? This to me just sounds like you read some anti-FFVII fanboy messageboard. Most RPGs don't have this.
Lost Odyssey is another example. FFVIII is another example. It's not in as many as I said, but it just annoys me.quote therealNgamer
What does this have to do with the game at all? Wow, most JRPGs have an anime art style. Moving on.
Then change my complain to "I don't like the art style." That's like blaming me for hating lemons because I think they're too sour.quote therealNgamer
So you're complaining that something really bad usually happens midway through the adventure? This is how the dramatic structure works. Every story follows this.
Again, this is a problem I have. Not something "really bad" but more so the specified. Every story will have something "bad" I just hate when I play a JRPG and go "Oh, I'm almost done with disk 2. Something really bad is going to happen." I never notice that when I read books. Examples of my specifics are FFVI,FFV, FFVII and Lost Odyssey.quote therealNgamer
This is an age-old stereotype. But even then, it sounds like you just don't like Barret or FFVII. This is an even bigger problem in FPSes.
That's like saying "It's okay to start war since people have been doing it forever." That's not an excuse. And I never said I only minded it in JRPGs.
quote therealNgamer
Every game has villains. If it's an evil empire so what? It's like complaining that Bowser is the bad guy in a Mario game. Or that Nazis are always the bad guys in WWII games. And there actually is more variety if you play a wide variety of JRPGs.
I tend to not like anything (movie, book, game) when your small group of heroes has to beat The Empire (creativity gold mine right there). Things like Seph in VII are okay, Bowser's okay, just evil empires get boring after a while.
quote therealNgamer
I can't even think of an RPG that has the situation you described.
FFIV, FFIX.quote therealNgamer
This is a cliche in every genre; final bosses always have a second form. That's like the first rule in the game development handbook.
So because it's a cliche it's okay? I don't like chicles. Copy and paste my war comment here.quote therealNgamer
Again, more anti-Nomura rhetoric.
It goes with the emo section, probably shouldn't post it again. Though I repeat, anti-Nomura? I don't like him that much but my list wasn't made with him in mind.quote therealNgamer
Again, a cliche in every single genre.
Do I really need to post my cliche opinion again?quote therealNgamer
I'm not sure what you mean by this. You mean that they're too good-looking for you? How is this a problem?
It's something I have with all games. I find it degrading to women to have them in games for sex appeal.quote therealNgamer
So you're complaining that there aren't any ugly chicks in RPGs?
Not ugly, just not......normal looking.quote therealNgamer
This doesn't even really happen that much. But when it does, I don't see how it deters from your enjoyment of the game. Not trying to put anything against FPSes, but they also have this stigma, except it's "big city destroyed by aliens."
I'll give you this one.quote therealNgamer
This to me just sounds like you don't like old school Final Fantasy. And there are tons of JRPGs these days that aren't even turn-based.
I was fine with it. It's just having over 10 games play very identical makes me bored of them.
quote therealNgamer
This happens in every single game, movie, book, etc... not just JRPGs.
I never said it was exclusive to JRPGs. I don't like in in any form of media.
quote therealNgamer
Um what? This sounds less like JRPG cliche and more like "I don't like Dragon Quest V."
Never played DQV actually. Have to get around to it. But anyway, this is a very small point, since many JRPGs don't have sequels. I can give you this point because it isn't in a lot in retrospect.
quote therealNgamer
Try playing something that's not as mainstream like Knights in the Knightmare, The World Ends with You, Baten Kaitos, Sigma Harmonics, Valkyrie Profile, etc... and tell me that JRPGs never try to be different.
This is the comment I wanted. Thing is
how am I supposed to know if something's a quality game if it aint' mainstream? Kameo is not a mainstream game, I found it by chance, but it's a quality game. But I never would have found it if I didn't pick it up as a a "Buy 1 Get 1" because I had no idea what it was. Main stream-JRPGs like FF don't take risks, but that's all I know. If you can give me a big list o' quality JRPGs that are different, I'd be grateful. I played WEWY, and it's one of my favorite JRPGs ever, because
it's different. Even XII I kind of liked because it's battle system was fairly different. FFIX on the other hand, if it wasn't for the story I would have dropped it, I got bored of it.
I used to be a
huge JRPG fan, however the more I played em in succession, the more I realized the similarities they all had. This can probably be said if I play any genre to death, but I only played JRPGs to that extent. I still can't wait for XIII though, I'm not totally off the JRPG train, I'm just playing a whole lot less of them.
Oh, and, BTW, I don't like Strategy RPGs.
