How different would the industry be if...

I'd love to ponder what would happen if Nintendo and Sony became one, but I think that Sony being Sony would've made their own console after the deal with Nintendo anyway.

I was thinking, what Nintendo and Sony should do NOW to gang up on Microsoft....Make games that playable online between the two.

Example:
I own a Wii, and my mate owns a PS3. We both own Call of Duty, and the only thing different between the two is the controllers, which doesn't affect online play. If I could play my mate with either an PS3 or a Wii, it means that Nintendo and Sony have a 50% chance of being bought, rather than 33% if they stay seperate.

Anyone else like this idea?

I know it's risky, but plenty of things have been risky in the past, with huge gains. What if whoever made Pacman said 'Nah, too risky, no-one will want to play with pixels'? We wouldn't be having this discussion in the first place

Pac-Man wasn't the first game (or much of a revolutionary game in terms of hardware) ever you know.

If the Play Station had come to market as originally intended, it would have most likely had very little impart on the market. Since it was originally suppose to be a CD based add-on to the SNES, it would most likely have fared about as well as the Sega CD, AKA, poorly. The 16t bit systems just couldn't handle it, and developers weren't ready for that much space at the time anyway.

Whether this team up would have led to a CD based system for Nintendo instead of the N64 is really the only effect such a merger would have had, and I sort of doubt Nintendo would have been any more willing to go through with that even after Sony made the add-on. The biggest draw for developers on Playstation 1, beyond the CD format, was freedom from the first party competition inherent on Nintendo and Sega systems. Square wasn't competing with Zelda, and wasn't having to conform to Nintendo's insane censorship of the 90's, so they succeeded far more on the PS, hence its popularity and the lack of third party support for Nintendo from then to present.

It was just three Zelda titles released for the Phillips CD-i. No Mario games were made. Nintendo had no involvement at all in the development of the three Zelda CDi titles. And because of this, they turned out to be three of the worst games of all time. And thankfully, They are NOT considered part of the Zelda canon. Everyone should just forget about these three games starting now.
