Red Steel 2 Confirmed, Will Use Wii MotionPlus
|
GamesIndustryGameGrepquote GamesIndustry
Ubisoft is one of the first publishers to confirm the use of the Wii MotionPlus peripheral to improve the execution of its core Wii titles.
Adopting the tech for the sequel to Red Steel, Alain Corre, Ubisoft's executive director, has said the improvement of 3D motions will help the sequel achieve the ambitious gameplay attempted in the first game.
"Red Steel 2 has been in development for many months now, and this new device will help us be even more precise in what we do with the product," said Corre, speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz.
The original Red Steel was released on the same day the Wii launched in Europe, and attempted to mimic the users' movements for gunplay and hand-to-hand combat, but was criticised for a lack of sensitivity.
Corre believes that the Wii technology wasn't finished at the time of launch, but the recent announcement by Nintendo that the MotionPlus add-on will track true 1:1 responsive movement will allow the development team to realise its ambitions.
"The Red Steel brand is strong - I think we released it on year one, and that people understood that it was a first try on new technology, technology that wasn't completely finished. And our game tried to grab the best out of it, and was a bit rushed to be sure to offer something in year one to Wii consumers," he added.
"So Red Steel is a brand, and as with every brand we have, we now have to reach the top quality possible. What was missing was the preciseness of the sabre - and with this new device I think it will change the experience."
Ubisoft is one of the few third-party publishers to see considerable sales success on the Wii, and Corre puts that success down to the amount of time spent on developing games for the unique home console, compared to competitors.
"When you make a great game, you need more than one year of development," offered Corre.
"A lot of games are made in less than a year, but they're not great products and they're not selling at all. So it takes some time to develop good games. This year we're coming with Shaun White, which we've developed over 18 months, and the same for Rayman 3.
"I think these two games can be in the top ten of the Wii charts at Christmas again, and there will also be new Wii games announced soon - more games dedicated to capturing this new audience," he concluded. GamesIndustry's full interview can be found here.

Given enough time and the WPM, along with some real FPS controls in the vein of MP3 and The Conduit, this could turn out to be a really good game.
If Ubisoft was smart, though, they would change up the style drastically, moving away from realism to a much more stylized game. Cell shading would be really, really sweet.

I don't know. If they went and cell shaded every game in existence, it would get boring. IT looked fine, just had major problems with gameplay.

Red Steel was an ok game overall the controls just sucked. Hopefully with time and WMP everything will be iron out and RS2 will be everything RS1 shouldv'e been.

I'm not saying every game should be cell shaded, but the Red Steel 2 in particular would really benefit if it went a heavily stylized route, like No More Heroes. It would fit better with the game's nature and fit better on Wii, in my opinion.

Screw that, I'm getting the Conduit. Kthxbai. My thoughts exactly. I'm not getting hyped for anything Ubisoftz makes after the disappoint that was Red Steel. quote Alain Corre

I agree, the original was weird. The game is called Red Steel, and u can slice people's heads off after u kill 'em!!! and multiplayer was just a joke. The game had some cool levels and enemies though.
I think it was a good concept 4 the wii, and it definitely has sequel potential.

I'm surprised they're making Red Steel 2, to be honest. I didn't think Red Steel went over well enough for them to make a sequel. I thought the original was a horrible game, to be honest.

I hope it is better than the first one. And I would rather get the Conduit for a shooting game. ~Zeta~

It still sold over a million copies at release, so of course Ubisoft is going to milk the name. I also find it funny the number of people who don't give this game a chance in hell, but are willing to be optimistic about the new Sonic game. At least Red Steel showed some potential for a good game outside of the obvious lack of polish and development time. Sonic Team hasn't produced anything but crap in the last decade, and yet people still latch onto whatever they make.

Although, I must say, the new Sonic RPG game for the DS does look good, and I probably will be getting that. But for the most part, Sonic games have always been pretty bad. Especially when people try to compare the earlier Sonic The Hedgehog games to Mario games.
