WiiFit - does it REALLY work?

This is something I began thinking about a while back. WiiFit is the first exercise video game. Now that brings up my question...will WiiFit REALLY help a person stay in shape or is it just an expensive ($90USD) simulator and nothing more?

I saw Nintendo Power's 2-week challenge of it. I don't think it was 100% truth. When a company like Nintendo Power previews a game they have to make it sound good to up sales, but I am not convinced.

Sure I will be getting it but if it doesn't really help in staying fit then did it miss its goal as an excerise game?

Yeah, the guy who tested did lose some weight but not that much [he showed what his 'old' pants were like. I doubt that was realistic]. And yes, he missed a few days, but still with the exercises he was doing would he have still lose more than that?

To me, WiiFit looks more like an exercise simulator and provoker than it does as an actual workout. It may get people to do real exercises but I doubt that game will do much itself.

Opinions?

Yeah. I am thinking that if I reviewed WiiFit that I'd give it a B- or B. Nothing higher than that. Fun to play, but misses its stay-in-shape-with-Nintendo goal. Though it will bring more people to realize how important working out is.

Wii Sports I don't see much weight loss potential. you only swing your arms whereas in WiiFit you move your entire body. I just don't see it doing much though. The routines may get harder and harder, but either people would quit or just decide to do regular work outs like weight lifting and whatnot.

Yeah, I agree. Nintendo was meant to creative non-real things like Mario and Zelda not virtualize real things like fitness, news, and shopping. it takes away from the real life experiences.

Wii Fit works. It just isn't as effective as working out in the gym.

But on the other hand, it's funner than working out in the gym.

Wii Fit is basically a stat tracking program that keeps up with how you improve over time, and how well you are balanced during exercises. The actual exercises themselves are classic exercises easily performed without the program, such as Yoga and push ups, and thus work just as well as those exercises. Basically, it provides real feedback to give you a guide to how you are progressing in a smaller, cheaper, and more private environment than a gym.

It probably doesn't work that well as a workout, but in (the maker of wii fit)'s interview on the nintendo channel he says the goal is to get people aware of their weight. He says just weighing yourself everyday makes "being aware of your health" fun. I say you should check out the interview if you haven't already.
