I just joined this site in the later part of 2009. I do agree its hard to find a interesting and original story but when you do, you can't help pat yourself on the back for enduring the pain right. They're one in handful and giving the time is tough(We all still have a our lives right?)
I'm admittedly a lazy writer, who can only write late at night. I have many errors and grammar trouble. I post and then edit later... bad habit.
Anyways I had fun reading your mock story by the way. It was genius like Robot Chicken and stuff.

To be serious, I agree, I also think its difficult to find a decent story due to recent posts. You only see whats getting posted now or a few days ago unless you're persisted as I'm. I've found a few that are old and
honorable mentions. I don't care what anyone says, they're gems in my eyes. Anyways I actually found them by accident on the web and it was the main reason I joined this site. Here's two of them for now anyways.
Writing Goodbye By Kaylee
and
In too deep by Boontz
Just to mention a few.
As far as subject matter go, I've always loved coming of age stories(the characters can be any age, its about growth) where someone who is growing up and learns the most deepest of lessons of life or the most useful about human behavior. I personally think lessons should have more personality and stories and novels give them that. When it comes down to, we're all really still in one of them coming of age parts of our lives, as long as we're doing something right?
That's just me, but I haven't seen much stories that have any "morals of the story" type of themes. They're mostly incidental, which isn't wrong at all but Morals is one of the things I would love to come across as well as understanding what its like to be in someone else's shoes (imaginary or not).
Mad props to you Hyron Silver for bringing this up and all you fabulous writers
for contributing. A great message and argument has a lot of perspectives and as a group, I think you've nailed it... almost a year, I'm so late.
All I have to contribute sadly is that I agree and that this is a real issue. I also agree not getting any helpful criticism does hinder your spirit. I imagine that most writers that perform on here are too shy to show their works to people they personally know (Like me) and turning to Neoseeker enables them to get feedback. Writer's need honest opinions and being favorites to their own story as well as "e-buddies" (I like this phase) isn't a really bias review. I don't want this privilege to be abused for the desire of simple comments even though I must admit my world lights up upon getting comments.
I think I've said too much. Anyways if you haven't asked if we LEARNED (I love that word) anything Hyron Silver, I wouldn't of read this insightful and hilarious thread. That's me saying thanks
