Right after beating Capt. Hina, the event that you fight Arlong was available. In the first fight, you take on Octoman Hatchi, but right after he's defeated, when you're taken back to the select screen to choose another character, the game takes you back to the start screen!

Is there something special I was supposed to do upon confronting Arlong? I didn't see any other events popup.
