V. ![]() Pre Match Summary: First game of the season is always going to be a difficult one for one every side, but for Celtic manager Gordon Strachan, he faces possibly the most difficult game of all, having to take his Celtic side to Old Trafford, to face Manchester United, who have new manager, Adam Jones. Jones has bought in plenty of young and fresh talent over the summer, with the likes of Nani, Anderson and Tevez, to help bring some youth and flair to his sides attack. Jones has also managed to acquire the services of Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich, in the hope that he will be able to sit in front of the defence, and give an extra layer of protection. Celtic will of course possess a stern challenge, with the likes of Shunsuke Nakamura in mid-field, and tall striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink up front, but Manchester United will go into the game as clear favourites. Key Players: ![]() Crisitano Ronaldo ![]() Shunsuke Nakamura Starting Line-Ups: Manchester United: (4-4-2) Foster, Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Ronaldo, Hargreaves, Scholes, Nani, Rooney, Tevez. Celtic: (4-4-2) Boruc, Wilson, Caldwell, Balde, Doumbe, McGeady, Hartley, Nakamura, Jarosik, Vennegoor, Zurawski. Kick-Off: Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez get us underway here at Old Trafford. 10: Cristiano Ronaldo has just had his first battle of the evening with Perrier Doumbe, which the Celtic defender wins comfortably. 19: Wayne Rooney bursts through into the Celtic penalty area, but can only fire a weak shot at Boruc. 26: For the first time in the game, Carlos Tevez shows what he can do by beating two men, but his left foot shot curls just wide of Boruc's right hand post. 28: Booking: Patrice Evra gets a yellow card for a reckless challenge on Nakamura. 30: Man Utd counter-attack with lightening pace, and Rooney finds himself clean through, but can only fire straight at the Celtic 'keeper. 38: Goal!: With their first real attack of the game, Zurawski produces an inch perfect cross, which is met by Vennegoor, and he powers his header past the helpless Foster. 0-1. Half-Time: 0-1: Celtic go in at half time in the lead, despite being on the back foot most of the game. 57: Nakamura fires a 32 yard free kick just over Fosters bar, and it had the United keeper looking worried. 60: Ronaldo tries to go one better, with a 35 yard free kick, but Boruc gathers it easily. 67: Man Utd are in need of some new attacking flair, and are bringing on Brazilian playmaker Anderson to replace Rooney. 73: Anderson produces some Brazilian magic to beat his man, but drags his shot wide of the goal. 78: Scholes thunders a shot from all of 25 yards off the bar. 81: Carlos Tevez beats 2 defenders and the goalkeeper, but his shot is cleared off the line by Caldwell who somehow managed to get back. Is it going to be one of those days for United? Full-Time: 0-1: Celtic run out winners here at Old Trafford, and the United players trudge off the pitch, looking very disappointed with themselves. Match Stats: Possession: 49% - 51% Shots On Target: 3 - 1 Shots Off Target: 4 - 3 Yellow Cards: 1 - 0 Red Cards: 0 - 0 Other Results: Aberdeen 3 - 2 Sunderland Hearts 0 - 2 Derby County Rangers 2 - 0 Birmingham City So Adam, can you take any positives out of todays game? We certainly can. Overall I thought we put in a very good performance, and our one touch passing was working very well indeed, and resulted in us creating plenty of chances, unfortunately today, we didnt take any of them, and they took the only one they created, but hey, thats football. Are there any areas you wish you'd strengthened over the summer, based on todays performance? Not at all. I've got every confidence in this group of players, and as I said, I thought todays performance was very good indeed, and if we can continue playing like that, then sooner or later, someones going to get 4 or 5 put past them. Despite this early set-back, are you still hoping for promotion to Division 1? Of course I am. We're only one game into the season, and yes, we lost it, but over the course of the season, you;re always going to lose the odd game here or there. We could now go on and win all 13 games left remaining, and we'd by top of the league by quite a margain. Thanks for speaking to us today Adam. It's a pleasure. Post Match Summary: Todays game will be a real wake-up call to all those Manchester United fans who thought that they'd just breeze through this league. Todays game proved, that you can have all the best young talent in the world today, but if you dont have the "fox-in-the-box," then you're always going to struggle. Celtic were not the best team on the pitch today, not by a long way, but they possessed the one thing that Manchester United didn't, and that was a striker who will bang the goals in for you. Louis Saha could well find himself starting the next game for United, as they try and find an aswer to the goalscoring problem, but who can you leave out. Carlos Tevez who they chased and chased all summer for, or Wayne Rooney who is one of, if not the, best young player in the world at the moment. For me, it'd have to be Rooney, as he was wasteful in front of goal today, but I'm not Adam Jones, so who knows what he will do. As for Gordon Strachan, I dont think he could have expected such a wonderful start to the season, especially considering that his Celtic team were on the back foot for 90% of todays game. As for the season as a whole, I still think Manchester United wil go up as champions, and I stil think Celtic will be battling it out for the second promotion spot come the end of the season, but todays game just goes to show, exactly how close and competitive this league is. ------------------- Some say that he isn't allowed, by law, with-in 100 yards of Lorraine Kelly.

Continued from here. V. ![]() Pre Match Summary: Both Manchester United and Hearts go into todays game on the back of a loss last weekend on the seasons opening day. Manchester United went down 1-0 at home to Celtic, whilst Hearts went down 2-0 at home to Derby. Much talk had been made about how well Hearts would manage without Scottish goalkeeper Craig Gordon, after his high profile move to Sunderland in the summer, and they got off to the worst possible start, and the critics will be waiting in anticipation for todays game at Old Trafford. Whilst Hearts are having trouble keeping goals out, Man Utd are having trouble getting goals to go in, and much talk has been made of who would be dropped out of Tevez and Rooney to allow Saha into the frame. Well, Adam Jones has surprised everybody, by naming an unchanged line-up from the one that got beat by Celtic, and the focus will clearly be on Wayne Rooney, as he was very wasteful in front of goal last week. As for the focus player on the Hearts team, it has to be goalkeeper Anthony Basso, as he tried to prove that Craig Gordon won't be missed. Key Players: ![]() Wayne Rooney ![]() Anthony Basso Starting Line-Ups: Manchester United: (4-4-2) Foster, Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Ronaldo, Hargreaves, Scholes, Nani, Rooney, Tevez. Hearts: (4-4-2) Basso, Karipidis, Zaliukas, Goncalves, Berra, Ivaskevicius, Stewart, L.Wallace, N. McCann, Pinilla, Makela Kick-Off: Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez start us off, in a game both teams will be desperatly hoping to win. 4: Some lovely one-touch football between Rooney, Tevez and Hargreaves eventually see's Tevez clean through, but he's brought to a halt by the linesmans flag. 10: Carlos Tevez this time beats the offside trap, but his shot cant beat Basso. 20: A lovely looking through ball from Gary Neville finds Tevez whos shot is parreid by the keeper straight into the path of Scholes, who is denied by a perfect sliding tackle from Goncalves. Business as usual for United it would appear today. 32: Wayne Rooney turns away from two defenders in the Hearts penalty area, but can only fire high and wide. 34: Vidic produces a magnificent save from Ben Foster. As the cross came in, Vidic tried to head it behind for a corner, and only managed to power a header straight at his own top corner, but Foster saved his team-mats blushes. 45: Wayne Rooney comes closest to scoring right at the death, but his curling right foot shot, which beat Basso all ends up, comes back off the post. Half-Time: 0-0: Somehow the score is still 0-0, despite Man Utd enjoying near total dominance. Saha to be introduced? 55: Jones appears to be losing patience with his current strike force, and Saha is now making an appearance, in place of Wayne Rooney. 58: Makela gets his head to a cross, and he forces a smart save from Foster. 60: Saha had been brough on to score goals, and he really should have done there, but instead, the ball ends up in Row Z. 68: Cristiano Ronaldo cuts inside from the right wing, and curls a left footed shot just inches past the post. Eagles on for Nani. 70: A typical Utd break-away ends with Tevez having the ball and the entire Hearts half to himself, and he has too much time to think about what he's going to do, and Basso saves quite easily. 74: Chris Eagles releases Ronaldo down the left, and the Portugese winger races away from the full back, but his powerful shot is straight at Basso. 81: Goal!!: Tevez exchanges passes with Saha and finds himself clean through on goal, and he slots the ball past the out-rushing Basso. Manchester United Finally have the break-through. 1-0 Full-Time: 1-0: Manchester United run out deserved winners here today. Is this going to be the kick start to their season? Match Stats: Possession: 50% - 50% Shots On Target: 5 - 1 Shots Off Target: 7 - 1 Yellow Cards: 0 - 0 Red Cards: 0 - 0 Other Results: Celtic 2 - 1 Aberdeen Derby County 0 - 1 Rangers Sunderland 3 - 1 Birmingham City Adam, got that first win on the board today, how do you feel? I'm delighted, of course I am. It was a fantastic performance all round, with the exception of our finishing, but we're going to do some extra work in training this week, and hopefully be back on track come our game at Birmingham at the weekend. You mentioned the porr finishing then, are you wishing you'd bought in another striker in the summer? Part of me is, but when you think I've got Tevez, Rooney and Saha to play up front, it was hard to try and justify buying another striker really, especially when you consider that in mid-field we've got Ronaldo, Anderson, Nani, Scholes, Giggs, Hargreaves and Carrick, who are all capable of grabbing a goal. Do you feel that it may have been a confidence thing, and now you've finally got that goal, you could go on and bang a few in next game? You never know. At the end of the day, footballs a funny game, and it's virtually impossible to predict whats gonna happen from one week to the next. Congratulations Adam. Thank you. Post Match Summary: Manchester United finally pick up that much needed win, but it could prove to be a win that's killed Hearts chances of promotion, but it was far from convincing. Although the performance overall was from the top draw, it just went to emphasise the point that Manchester United need a "fox-in-the-box." The sort of player who'll grab you 20 goals a season. As for Hearts, well, Basso produced a great performance to show that Gordon's not being missed, although the out-field player's didn't really give him much help, and if they are to have any chance of doing anything this season, then they're going to need to improve dramatically. Manchester United's season back on track? Possibly. Hearts season off the rails? Yes, and by a long way. ------------------- Some say that he isn't allowed, by law, with-in 100 yards of Lorraine Kelly.

quote TVIJust gone through the midseason window in my ML, currently second in the table but out of the cup after PSV gave me a hiding in the away leg Players in: CF Frentzen (ML youth, changed name on neo file) CMF S. Padoin (Free transfer) CMF Scully (ML youth, changed name on neo file) SB Rat (Part ex for Stein) Players out: Ximelez (to Everton) Macco (to Marseille) Castolo (loan to Villarreal) Stein (to Shakhtar, Rat coming in exchange) Technically I didn't break my rule of bringing in more than three players per season since Shakhtar offered me the Rat/Stein deal My team salary has just about crept above the 10k mark though, so I'll have to sell a couple of players in the summer window, but I can't bring any in unfortunately. So this is my current starting eleven of choice: Santarelli Belleri - Negro - Domizzi - Rat Menseguez - Padoin - Tomassi - Monterrubio Arshavin - Capone Subs: GK Pipolo CB Mantovani SB De Silvestri CMF Dodo SMF De Ceglie CMF Scully CMF Montesanto CF Maccarone CF Frentzen CF Ordaz Pretty happy with my squad, should have enough depth for promotion. Next year could be a different story in the super league though, especially since I won't be bringing any players in over the summer ------------------- | |
