How deep is Bioshock really?

I was wondering. I have read a lot about Bioshock's thrilling storyline that forces players to make agonizing decisions that force you to consider moral and ethical issues. It is supposed to play with your mind and make you begin to question the relevancy of right and wrong. Bioshock has received so much acclaim for it's revolutionary RPG style take on choosing between right and wrong.

I have begun playing the game and I am impressed. It has amazing graphics, immersive atmosphere, quality physics, an extremely creative system of weapons and plasmids but I am left wondering where is the depth. It seems that every time you kill a Big Daddy you pick up a girl and chose if you will harvest her or set her free. Kind of like: press A to be good, press B to be evil. Without spoiling any plot points or story line, please answer me this. Does it get any deeper than that? Are there more difficult choices to make? Do you really get to a point where you feel like you are faced with impossible choices? Or is it all just a fork in the road, option A or B?

Don't get me wrong, I think the game is amazing to play. I find myself wanting to know more about the decline of Rapture and listening to the tape recordings scattered around the ruins. I am hooked on the game play and the style and atmosphere. It's obvious that a huge amount of care has gone into crafting a believable and world and great experience but I feel that so far, the mind bending moral dilemmas I've heard so much about are a little over hyped.

So tell me, does it get deeper? Or is choosing if you will harvest the little sisters the limit of the depth of choice between right and wrong?

re: How deep is Bioshock really?

I never saw choosing to Harvest or save the little sisters as a grand moral decision. Without spoiling anything, your decision to harvest them will only change the ending (There are two). To be honest, I just saved them for the achievement.

Aside from that, there are about 3 other small decisions you can make that have very little effect on the story, so basically it's not incredibly deep, but it's still a spectacular game.

Yeah, I have to agree. It's just so well crafted. And it's original compared to todays slew of shooters. I'll still finish it because (even though it's kind of on rails) I really want to see the story through.

You cant really say how deep it is without ruining the plot though. And if you want to know alot of the story in the game, you'll have to find all of the audio diaries, you'd be suprised what you can find out with those.

However plot-based games tend to give you little replay incentive.

re: How deep is Bioshock really?

I am always up for buying a plot based game with little replay value because I respect the art. I am however borrowing Bioshock from a friend.

I applaud Bioshocks in depth story line but it's clear that it's not much of an choice making RPG. There is a lot other shooters could learn from this game.

Yeah, I wouldn't say its the choices one has to make that are so deep, but more just the story itself.

re: How deep is Bioshock really?

Even thought it's basically on rails, I'm enjoying it. I mean, who doesn't enjoy a good ride on a roller-coaster? The message behind the game and the themes are well done although sometimes a bit too over-the-top and could be more subtle but over all I think it's a step in the right direction for games. I want to see more games like this, more games that are like watching an interactive movie. Multi-player or not, on rails or whatever, I like it.

re: How deep is Bioshock really?

You don't make any choices yourself so in that sense, it isn't that deep

However as you advance through the storyline then it becomes deep. It "can" play on your mind but not enough to the degree that makes you question yourself with "what am I doing here?" since unfortunately it doesn't have the type of plot-paths where you can choose to fight or work with the enemy...kind of more written in for you (sorry trying to word it, without spoiling anything...pretty hard actually )
