Good day, folks. This looks like a great deal of fun, so I'll jump in.
Here is my entry:
Here is a link to the same picture in all of its 4288 x 2848 glory.
Description: My friend and I were making a Greek mask out of wood for a class project. After we got done cutting out the eyes and the mouth, I said to him, "Hey, hold these up against your face." The rest is history. How it fits: He's holding wood up against his face. Symbolic representation aside, the main focus of this picture is on the wood and its odd juxtaposition yet fit with his face. Edits involved: None at all.
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest heat as a theme. Reasons being, first and foremost, it's July now! Also, it's a pretty flexible theme that can allow for some artistic exploration. It could tie in with sunsets, which was brought up earlier, as well as a number of other things.
Cool beans! I just realized that my entry for heat works equally as well in this challenge, if not moreso.

Description: This was a photo I had taken while out camping two weeks ago. We were all huddled around a beautiful campfire around 9 or 10 at night, and I couldn't help but take a few pictures. How it fits: This was taken at night, as you can tell by the picture and description. Edits involved: Firstly, I applied a slight vignette in order to shape the emanated light a little better. Then I altered the brightness and contrast so that the details in the flame were more easily visible.
Hi! Sorry for the late reply. Third place; that is awesome, thank you . Also, macro is a good theme choice...I definitely approve. Edits used: Brightness and contrast were adjusted in order to give the image flavor. A slight vignette was applied to frame the center lily pad. A white border was added too, as you can see. That covers it, if you'll excuse the pun.
I'm with PA on this one. I really don't mean to sound rude or impatient, but I was hoping I'd see these results before I went off for college. That day is tomorrow. :S Not a big deal I guess, I'm sure ctrl has a good reason he hasn't posted anything yet.
Oh crap . I honestly did not see myself winning this; there were a ton of great entries this round! It's an honor and a privilege. Thank you!
ctrl; I'm sorry to hear about your concussion. I wish you the best and a speedy recovery! As for the color, it's a lucky mix of dirty water and good coloring on the lily pad. Adjusting the contrast brought out the aesthetic best in both of those. It was fairly close to a bridge, so I was treated with a great position for the shot. And you're right; I didn't use a macro lens. College has sort of been draining my camera equipment fund . I used the default 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor that came boxed with my D90. Thank you again, and I'm really glad you liked it!
Paranoid_Android; Thank you ! I took this picture in southern New Jersey; specifically, in the town of Browns Mills at Mirror Lake. They seem to grow in shallow water closer to land, so keep that in mind if you go hunting. Best of luck!
Awesome! I'll put some thought into it tonight and I'll post what I come up with tomorrow.
Edit: I've been thinking; in my writing class, we've been going over an essay based on seeing the "artificial obvious" versus the "natural obvious." Basically, the natural obvious is what is plain to see; the sun, the billboard, the tree. The artificial obvious is what you won't necessarily notice at first, and may not notice at all; the penny on the sidewalk, the bird hidden in the bush, the way the sun hits the tree at a specific angle at a specific time...I think that would be a pretty cool theme for this round. To sum all of that up, I'd like this theme to be about the little things that possibly nobody, except you in your serendipity, have noticed. Feel free to paraphrase that.
Sure thing! I've been a pretty busy with schoolwork, but there's an earlier image in my gallery that could work.
Spoiler:Entry
Reasoning: A friend and I were taking a walk in a park / creek sort of thing not too long ago. We stopped and were just looking over the guardrails at the water when I saw this image. At first, I really dug the way the light was dynamically framing the center plant in the water, as well as how nicely such a range of warm / cool colors fit in. Then I looked a bit closer, and saw that the little specks that I mistook for spores, seeds, or the like were moving, and I was just a tad creeped out.
Ah, I didn't think so...I was a little confused when you asked me for an entry.
Anywho, I've made my decision and written out my critiques, but this round only has two entries. Shall I post, or would it be best to wait the weekend for another entry or two?
Ok! Sorry for the few day delay; I've had a few exams to take care of. Without further ado, the judging!

I really like this photo! It's neat how your warm and cool colors work together so well, and I think that helps open the photo to a lot of different interpretations. When I first saw it, I thought that perhaps you were looking out a hospital window, and the anxiety I imagined was nearly palpable. Very nice work! (Also, those black bars are pretty cool! Almost feels like I'm looking at a movie still.)
Spoiler:Justin
I really like this photo, as well! Very interesting idea, actually...it's so simplistic, but there's so much that you can draw from it. I can see myself connecting with the implied anxiety in the pencil's bite marks. Also, the cool tones really work to your advantage here.
The winner of this round is...
Spoiler:
Justin! This was a tough decision to make, because I really liked both photos so much! Both photographers had incredible, thought-provoking takes on this theme. However, I believe Justin's message was very well pronounced and framed, and that he has earned the victory of this round.
