Majesco's The Darkness was one of the first next-gen titles that the world found out about, and as a result, we know a little more about this one comparatively. To start, the premise is based on the Top Cow comic book of the same name -- telling the story of mafia hitman Jackie Estacado and the curse he's forced to live with.

You see, on Jackie's 21st birthday he's suddenly possessed by an unknown power known as "The Darkness," and from the moment on he finds himself at war with his former employers in the Franchetti crime family and its boss, Cousin Paulie. Naturally, a big part of the game's storyline will be how Jackie struggles with the sentient Darkness while simultaneously battling the Franchettis, as well as fleshing out the backstory of the Darkness itself.


Gameplay is said to be completely non-linear with camera perspectives in both the third and first-person views. Moreover, The Darkness continues the trend of several of the PS3's upcoming titles in that it will boast completely destructible environments -- including stages that take place in New York City's slums, harbors, subway tunnels, and rooftops. And as expected, the enemies found within these levels are all inspired by Marc Silvestri's own dastardly creations from the comic book.

For us, the most promising aspect of the game is its development team Starbreeze Studios. The same crew responsible for the excellent Chronicles of Riddick, Starbreeze has shown that it definitely knows how to mix the finer points of technology with strong gameplay. But rather than just rest on its laurels and use an updated version of the Riddick engine for The Darkness, the production team has built an all-new engine specifically for this game. Sounds good to us.
